Question

I want to upgrade the front door speakers in my MY98. I would like to fit perhaps 2 or 3 way speakers but having removed the passenger side door panel I see that there isnt much room as when the window is down it is fairly close to the back of the speaker.

So the depth of the new speakers may be a problem.

Has anyone else upgraded their front door speakers and if so which ones did they use?

Any help appreciated

Question

Thanx ScoobyJawa

Do u know the spec of these Infinity speakers? 2/3 way, wattage etc.?

U mentioned that I could order them via mail order. This would probably be the best option for me as I live in Ireland.

Any web addresses of suppliers?

Cheers,

Gavin G

Gavin - they are 270watt Max

They are 2 way component speakers, so the tweeter is seperate to the main speaker - on my car, MY99, the tweeters sit behind the grill on the door catch so totally stealth

As far as retailers, not sure which is cheapest etc but (if its working!!) you could do a search in here for them as theres been a few threads recently.

From the top of my head http://www.bass-junkies.com http://www.caraudiodirect.com http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk

Also - don't know if its any use, but Halfords(Ripspeed) sell them, although they sometimes say they don't but they do , but not cheap at 120 quid. Not sure if ya have them in Ireland though?????

www.incarexpress.co.uk did mine for around £93 IIRC. Price last time I looked was £97, but there was talk of them not being available from some sources any longer.

I want to do my fronts as well. Found the 605CS at http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/focus.php3?partno=605cs

Just a coule of Questions...
You say the tweeters go straigh it behing the iccle grill (where tight **** subaru dont put any)? Do they sound OK from behing there?

Realisticaly, for a muppet like me who has never had a car door apart, what are my chances of screwing this up?

John Banks recommended the Infinity 605cs and I have to say that I'm well impressed. Fitted straight in out the box, and sounds great on the Sony Head unit. Heard Johns speaker on a 150 watt RMS amp and they really do sound fantastic.

Do yourself a favour and get a pair....

Maybe we should rename the ICE section to the Infinity appreciation section

Got mine from www.bassjunkies.com

The Ickle grill is next to the door handle, assuming that your MY98 has the updated interior (with the lidded oddment tray in the middle of the dash)

Do your doors look like this?

If so, you can see the ickle grill by the door handle.

If not, you ain't got em. Mount the tweeters on the back of the triangle bits behind your wing mirrors (inside the car ) like the picture above - you'll find that you get a much better stereo image, anyhow, as you can point the tweeters at your ears...

Nick.

Cool

Just to add that taking the door cards off is easy as pie, take a look at Chiarks site and it tells you how

Sound from behind the grills sounds great, although as nick said, in the triangle bit you can point em at you so it sounds even better!!!!

Question

Cheers guys

My door cards do look like the one in the pic so I woould be able to mount the tweeters near the door handle.

Would it be much more difficult to mount them in the triangle bit behind the wing mirrors? Are there any extra modifications/bits needed that wouldnt come with the speakers?

To mount 'em, you need a way of securing them. I just used a metal strip (with holes in it - like the stuff that comes with a head unit) bent over to allow me to reposition with a bit of bending.

Of course, this is less stealthy than just using the grilles.

Oh and while we're on the subject, any ideas on what type of speakers would be best for upgrading the rear ones?

Gavin,

I put mine behind the grills so that any tea leaf looking in wouldn't see any obvious signs to indicate decent ICE in my car!

John Banks reckons you don't need to do the rears if you get the infinity's

I did mine first though and have the Kenwood PSR70P which are flippin excellent considering they hardly have a magnet - dual mags stuff - keeps the weight down for optimum 0-60

The 605's are 17cm right? I though only 13 cm will fit front doors? Or is that only pre 00 models (old interior)

Just had a look on MCS Direct and they do them for £93. One question that may spawn many more, I have only the headunit at the moment (Kenwood Mask) how do I connect the crossover device. Do these things come with good instructions to set them or do I take the car to a shop??

I'm willing to install the speakers myself (I did my headunit - brag brag), but I don't want to damage the speakers due to incorrect wiring or equipment.

Ian,

Simple way (based on my MY00) is to unplug the current Subaru speaker then wire that into the Xover. Then you need your own new speaker wire from the Xover to the 2 new speakers (per door). I'd never done anything like this before and managed to do it without blowing the speakers or myself up!!

More complex way is to reroute new cable all the way from the amp to the Xover.

cheers,

greg

Agree with Gregh - it's a piece of cake if you print out Chiark's instructions beforehand. Just need a couple of metres of cable to connect the speakers to the crossover.
If you choose to put the tweeters on the bit by the wing mirrors, the 605cs have a mounting kit included in the box.

Question

I have just bought the Infinity 605cs speakers and I was wondering how to install them. Where do I put the crossover? Would it be ok inside the door or do they have to be in the car somewhere?

Would they not get wet if they were inside the door? Also will i need a spacer to keep the speakers out from the door a bit so the window wont hit the rear of them when it is winded down?

Any help appreciated

No spacer needed, I put the crossover about halfway up the door against a silver metal bar. Make sure the electric windows still go up and down!!

Do a search in here, Chiark posted a picture as he helped me with the install.

cheers,

Question

U reckon that a spacer isnt needed. Then why is Jimi posting a thread where he has made spacers out of 8mm MDF? What does he need these spacers for?

Also u mentioned that you mounted the crossover against a sliver metal bar. Is this between the two door panels? And how are the crossovers mounted, is it using screws?

Cheers

Well I have an MY00 4 -door with no spacer. that's one of the main reasons people get these speakers, as they drop straight in.

No idea why he is posting pictures of his spacer. I used the Subaru black plastic surround that the OEM speakers are in.

The infinities come with a metal spacer that directly fits to the subaru door and then you mount the speaker on that.

Theres a recess about half way down the door and 6" or so from the hinge with a metal bar running down it - the crossovers sit on that in the hole nicely, make sure they are secured well (gaffer tape/duck tape should do it) and the windows still wind down as thats the leccy windown bar......

Question

ScoobyJawa,

Do I need to route a new speaker cable from the head unit to the crossover. I've heard that this is better (in terms of sound quality) than using the original Subaru speaker cable or is this only necessary if I am running the Infinitys from an amp rather than the head unit?

My head unit is a Pioneer DEH-P6300R (Mosfet 4 x 50watts).

Cheers,

The Infinities come with a metal spacer included - it is in with the grills (that you won't need) - in between the white plastic packaging and the backing piece of cardboard. This is screwed into the black plastic mount in the door, and then the speakers are screwed into the spacer. Make sure the connections on the back of the speakers are not piting up, as they will obstruct the window coming down.
I have gaffer taped the crossover to the inside of the door, towards the back and towards the bottom. No problems with it at all.

Gavin,

Either way - you will get better sound from decent speaker wire. At the moment I've left mine with the standard subaru stuff from the headunit as I'm going to wire them up to an amp soonish so I'll change it then. If you plan to leave it powered by the H/U I'd replace the wire and get the best sound you can from them that way. Bear in mind that even with a 4x50w H/U the speakers will still be under powered and a small amp would really do them more justice. All depends if you want to start messing about with amps or not....
My H/U is 4x40 and while the sound is sooooooooooooooooooo much better than the standard rubbish, it will be better still through the amp and new wire

Hope that helps,
Cheers
Neil.
