Just swapping the speakers
If I was to do the above and leave the original head unit would there be much difference to the sound quality, mainly bass,/ treble. I'm not after a huge thumping system like in my younger days i just want nice sound when its turned up a bit!!
All advice appreciated!

Assuming that this is the same bugeye you want a new, later, headunit for, I would say yes!
Do not go for the very high-end speaker systems if you are not planning on adding external amps later as these will be more mid-bass rather than full range drivers for the main units, and (generally) require some serious power to really shine.
The original speakers are incredible to behold, if they weren't bolted in place they would float away!
You should also plan to upgrade the speaker wires etc, although I ca't recall how easy this is on the standard head unit (no point having quality wires going to a sh*tty plastic connector block)
Try and test some 'name brand' speakers in an appropriate retail outlet, just ensure they have the sub's switched off, so you can identify how much bass they can produce.
You should have to find space for the passive crossover on a decent setup, but these can be fitted quite easily behind the door card.
I'm afraid I can't recommend any particular brands/models etc as I have not been paying much attention recently!

Yeah Its the same one, I'm gonna get an 05 kenwood factory headunit ( assuming it'll go straight in) and just buy some kenwood door speakers as a straight swap. Hopefully that should do the job. Like I said I just want a bit of sound quality, not blow the doors off!!!

I replaced just the 'speakers at first (05 WRX, info in the FAQ), and it was better but still rubbish.
For the cost of a second hand standard HU you could get something much better - I'd say replace both the HU and the 'speakers.
Unless you're amping it up I wouldn't bother with the 'speaker wires myself though - I don't think it would be worth it for the amount of effort needed (IMHO).

I've just upgraded my speakers and it's made a world of difference. See the following post.
Cost was around ninety pounds and two hours of my time.

i just put pioneer single din in and the difference is awesome, the standard speakers sound ok (ish) but are coming out over the next week or so but the head unit made a huge difference. I also put in the single din conversion thing from Subaru which is a silver box with a littel door to store your glasses or something in. Fits nicely but had to alter teh head unit with my dremmel!!
