I have a split charge system, 2 batteries, I'm only running 2 amps though, a Viper d600.1,running an RE SX12(1 ohm) and a very old kenwood KAC-923, running from Infinity comps, these are both fairly powerful amps and I have never had a problem with flat batteries, apart from the OEM battery packing up that is, replaced with a calcium type with no trouble since.

Don't know how easy it would be to fit an extra alternator, but would be interested to know if you manage it succesfully.

ive got a second battery in the boot but i was trying to avoid a split charge system, both my amps are also powerful the mono one being 1,OHM. ive had a chat with the lads at sq+ my local ice people and they agree the second alternator is the best opption, its just a matter of making a bracket to hold it the good thing is that not havin air con means the pully has the the room to take a belt to run the second one. im gonna get on to it this weekend i'll keep you posted on how i get on.

Why not go to an alternator speialist and get your existing alternator ( or another which can always be kept) uprated. This is what I did in my Ford Escort days.

Having a higher powered alternator means you only need the one .

this would be the better solution i think as another alternator in the system would be quite difficult to get to work well unless the audio system was comletely independant to the rest of the electrical system on the car and only ran off the extra alternator,

it would be totally independant, the second alternator would have a power supply into the boot where there is a second battery which the system would be run off, the only thing is the head unit which is run off the original front battery but im not sure if that would be a problem. (but i could be wrong). thanks for the comments keep them commin lads.

if your really keen to do it then i guess nothing is impossible, you will need to make brackets and get the correct belts and sort out a pully arrangement to get it to work, earth it at the same place as the original one to stop earth loops and then run your power cable as you normally would, the HU will not be a prob running off the standard alt as it will work as long as it has power and wont really mind where it comes from, you will only need a battery in boot as a storage bin for excess power produced i think as the alternator will power the system when it is running as the standard ones does,
i have never done this myself and my comments are just what i can think of off the top of my head, give it a go and see what happens, the worst that could happen is that you get it wrong, have an electrcal fire and burn your lovely car to bits!!!!
its one if them things that will need to be right of painfully wrong i thinks, but like i say, give it a go and see how you get on

I know this is telling granny to suck eggs, but don't forget you'll need to fuse it before it goes anywhere near the firewall

Good luck

i know david wallis ended up moving his alternator when he made his engine front entry (as opposed to the normal rear entry) so you might want to PM him to get details?
