Question

I've just bought a P1 and I managed to broker a deal for the dealership to swap out the speakers (front and rear). Can anyone tell me what kind of speakers are in the P1s at the mo, also which are best for the car. I've told them its going to cost them between £200-250.

Cheers

If it is the same as MY00 UK spec turbo (I think it is) then they are 6-6.5 inch in the front made of paper, with a second cone for the tweeter. Similar in the back shelf without the tweeter. They are incredibly poor quality.

You can get some Infinity 605CS for under £100 to go in the front. These have an outboard crossover box which can be fitted in the door. They also have a separate silk soft dome tweeter and sound very good indeed. I would only change the rear speakers if you are not going to fit a subwoofer and amp.

You need to change the headunit. Suggest Kenwood 5080R for about £160 (CD single slot) as the minimum entry level which will sound good either powering the speakers directly or through an amplifier.

You should also consider sound- deadening for the doors.

see http://www.jcsbanks.btinternet.co.uk/car_audio_components_data.htm

Overall, I wouldn't let a Subaru dealer touch the ICE on my car. The ones I have spoken to do not have a clue and tried to sell me overpriced rubbish. Either learn and do it yourself or get a recommended ICE shop to do it properly in a car with the sort of value of a P1.

On my page you will see details of my install which only cost £600 or so and makes an incredible difference on standard. They sky is the limit, but at a minimum change the headunit and the front speakers and add some sound-deadening. Could do this for £300 inc VAT + say one to two hours for labour maximum.

Thanks John. I thought I was going to have to post myself some suggestions.

The scooby dealer has offered to change them, I don't know how good they are though.

We're definitely not dead!

What sort of music do you like?

And are you going to Donington? If so, there's quite a few things to listen to...

Don't bother. Many competition winning cars have no rear speakers. You only have two ears. Only use them for rear passengers, and then at very low volume. See link on my page to uk.rec.audio.car FAQ and look at this bit on soundstage.

JOhn, but I've got the dealer to commit to buying them and installing them - I may as well take them. Can you recommend ones for the back. Also, have the 6502s been replaced by 652s?

Cheers

Agree with John 605 are brilliant. I have them currently running off the head unit, with a cheap amp and sub.

Fronts: 605CS were said to have been replaced by 655CS by some on here, which are a different size.

Rears: any 6" speaker should go in. Some 6x9 will fit with work. Do a search don't know any models off hand. If you are fitting a sub, really do not bother at all.

John

How about this - I leave the back speakers as they are and ask them to buy me an amp instead ?

I was thinking of this one

What do you think oh master ?

Looks like a good amp for the cash. Try some other ICE retailers as per earlier link and you might find something a little more powerful for similar money.

This latest option will sound better by far, but will involve more installation and you will have to do a lot of arm twisting...

Looks like a handy amp, plus you've got spare channels to add a sub should you want to (ie amp up the front speakers, and bridge the other two channels to drive a sub)
