MY01 Pants stereo cure
#1
I've heard and read that the MY01 stereo sounds cr@p. However, for security reasons, I don't want to replace it with a standard single din unit but I would like a bit more omph. Has anyone changed speakers or fitted amps and what have the results been?
Thanks

You can do both if you can afford it.You could either get a speaker-level to line-level converter,or find an amp you like with that converter built into it.
With that upgrade it would be best if you replaced the speakers too.Just speaker upgrades would help alot, but if you want any real kick,an amp would be needed.Plus with a setup like that, you could throw a sub in the trunk(boot)if you wanted more bump.
Factory rear speakers run off of the HU as they are now, with the front speaker wires going to a 4 channel amp running a set of components up front, and tap into the rear speaker wires for the rear channel for a sub input wich would let you use the fader as a sub level control.
Just an idea. All but the tweeter would be invisible.

I've done all that to my Scoob - changed the stereo to a Sony Minidisc.
The outputs on the back are kind of like a HiFi amp - speaker outputs and phonos.
You've got 2 simple options-
1. just upgrade the speakers to better ones. Most people put in Infinties, JL Audio & JBL.
This just replaces the factory speakers - no need to rewire.
If you change the rears - beware, it's a nightmare job. Find Chiark's website - it'll explain how to do it.
2. Install an amp (4 channel - 2 for the front and 2 for the rears). This plugs into the phonos on the back of the stereo. You'll then have to run new cable- again, easy. Then install new speakers.
The quality will blow your mind - compared to the factory stuff.
Finally, for bass, you can install another amp to run a sub (10 - 12" speaker). This goes in the boot. It WILL take up some bootspace, unless you go for a sub that fits in the spare wheel space (Pioneer do one, amongst others)
You should also look into a CD changer too.
Any other questions, feel free to give me a shout. Email's in the profile.....

Dan

Having looked through this thread has anyone looked at the Pioneer FH-P6600R ?
It's expensive but I think it looks the mutts nuts
Its a double din unit in silver so it matches the dashboard surround nicely and has all the features you would expect to find, including a steering wheel remote control thrwon in. The display has 10 background colours and a 11 band graphic equaliser.
I recently spoke to Hendon car stereo who advise waiting for at least a month though as the 2001 range from Alpine and the like will be out then and there is supposedly some nice double din units on the way .
