Default My audio system sounds rubbish!! Advice needed...

Morning all, just installed some Focal 6” speakers into the front of MY 03 WRX, they sound really good to say they are the slim line models… I’ve put some JL Audio 5 ¼ inch speakers into the rear, which to be honest are bloody rubbish. The speakers themselves are top of the range from JL Audio costing around £240, I think it’s the enclosure which is causing the problem.

I’m running a classic Rockford Fosgate 12” punch sub (DVC) in the boot but the system is lacking some serious middles. I wanted to install my JL Audio 6x9’s somewhere, but don’t want to start cutting into the small parcel shelf behind the rear seats…

Any suggestions?

Cheers, MikeyB

been here with my bugeye ( and mine did sound crap)

first thing forget the 6x9's ( bin them now ...serious, spent days crafting a rear shelf just for them to sound terrible)

now whats powering your fronts and how much sound deadening are you using

a good solid mid sound comes from little vibration in the door and well mounted speakers which equals lots of dynamat and solid speaker mounts

if you have the 6" fronts they should be ok

I went from PG 5 1/2 fronts powered by a PG amp sony rear speakers and 6x9s also powered by amp with a 12 inch vibe sub

to 6" rainbow fronts powered by a JL 500/2( loads of dynamat) and 2 12" PG subs powered by a jl500/1

the first setup sounded very good in my old bmw mini and rubbish in the scoob the second setup is un real I know a few guys who are into their car audio big style and they have said how good it sounds for what they say is a budget system ( i thought it cost me an arm and a leg but there you go )

only problems i get are a few rattles I cant find

Hi Rich, thanks for the reply.

I've got the fronts and rears running off a JL Audio 300/4 amp, no dynomat and to be honest, they are not mounted the way I want them at all, perhaps thats the key area I need to work on.

Where can I get some decent mounts from?

The sub is driven by a 240watt mono RF amp, which will do the job for now.

I got 6x9's into the back door of my 97 WRX.. 350W Pioneers - complete **** to do but was worth it. metal cutting, custom rings etc, JUST fit
Just need a lot of brute force and ignorance, patience and dont forget to protect the outer skin from the bass to avoid dents in the doors.

mount ... the best i have ever found are mdf diy jobs, you can with time make them perfect and are easy to make

serious though with a nice amp like that you need some dynamat to do it proud

your system should sound good,, the only bad word i have had about mine is tooo much mid base

come on guys what does everyone else think

You dont say what head unit you are running them off as this could be a key area. You should be able to tweak the bass, mid and top end from the head unit by using the controls.
Also is the amp set up for high pass, through, or low pass????
Are you running the speakers direct from the amp or using the attachment for OE speakers???

The output of your RCA's is also a factor - the higher the voltage the better the sound.

Using a track like Madonna or Michael Jackson, will highlight where you need improvement and these contain good vocals, a good dose of bass and some intricate mid range.

Find a quiet place away from annoying neighbours and have a play.
Good Luck
