I will soon be ordering a new scoob from Europe. It will be a MY02 car and I understand from the importer that the audio package will be identical to UK spec cars.
I test drove a MY01 WRX but forgot to listen to it.
I'm not the sort of person who will go out and pay an extra £800 for a sound system, but if the standard system is crap and I can order an upgrade from the factory or dealer before delivery I might consider paying an extra £200-£300.
Thanks in advance

It is absolutely shockingly horrendous. Do not get any Subaru audio accessories.
Replace the headunit with a £150 CD headunit from Kenwood, Sony et al. Change the front speakers to some £100 components (with separate tweeter). Spend £20 or so on some sound-deadening to fit inside the door.
Headunit fitting is a five minute plug in job. Speakers are more tricky, but if you want us to advise you with links and pictures it can be done by a muppet like me - including an amp install. My neighbours were surprised to see me ripping apart my brand new Scooby, but no mishaps!

John,
I'm also pretty unimpressed with the sound system that comes as standard. Jza in another thread mentioned that the head unit is actually a Kenwood unit and that the main problem is with the cheap and nasty front speakers.
I would be interested to know how you went about getting the speakers replaced, what you went for and your impressions.

My car is a MY00. But having listened to the MY01 setup it is equally rubbish. Interesting point about the headunit. I suppose you could change the speakers first and then change the headunit if you needed to (I suspect you would). Funny, on the MY00 the best thing to change was generally agreed to be the headunit first as it was really really dire.
I put a Kenwood 5080R CD headunit in mine to a Kenwood 848 4 channel amp bridged to 2 channels to run Infinity 605CS front component speakers. They are quite shallow in depth, easy to fit (at least in MY00 - I think MY01 is the same) and have a crossover which fits inside the door. They have excellent clarity, detail and imaging. And they cost under £100 and will also take a heck of a wack of power from an amplifier. I got mine from www.incarexpress.co.uk

John,
Many thanks for this. I guess if the speakers are the main culprits the fix is relatively pain free financially. If not then having looked through this months 'What Car' supplement on car gizmos I have one or two ideas on how to fill that huge space that would be left in the dashboard!
