I have a boxed 10" db raptor sub in the boot, i'm considering adding another. I'm going for a flush fit across the whole width of the boot.
Am I better off using 2 small boxes (that are tuned for this sub or just 1 big one.
any suggestions appreciated.
Chiark - you don't have a template for the sub box front (where the subs mount)

cheers

you need enough air volume for both subs.

you also need to ensure both get the same signal (summed mono of l+r), and ideally run them from the same amp in parallel, otherwise, you'll get some cancellation.

if this is the case, then either one box or two are acceptable and very little difference between them. two gives you flexibility in mounting plus if one sub blows, you can still use the other one on its own.

if they're not getting the same signal, from the same amp then I'd use two boxes, otherwise they'll be fighting each other.

oh and make sure they're both connected in phase - otherwise the fight between them will get nasty!!

Steve

As Martin (Kryten) says, you need enough air for both. Ideally, the subs need to be absolutely identical, bought at the same time (for the suspension/spider to bed in at the same time) running of exactly the same signal if you're using a shared airspace.

Personally, I'd always run one driver in one box as it's what I've always done. Saying that, I've heard some nice systems with a shared box...

Regarding the template, I made it out of cardboard first then threw it away - sorry. It's pretty easy to do - just get some cardbaord and use that. Also my template may not fit your car as manufacturing tolerances appear quite lenient in this portion.

Kryten - good to see you around! Thought you'd disappeared!

Nick.

Sorry, a very basic thought... if you want more bass, are you giving your current sub enough power? Could it take more? Consider though that a doubling in power will only give you 3dB more, as will adding a second sub at the same power. To get double the "volume" (+10dB) you will need 10x the power. Just hoping you aren't disappointed by "only" doubling the power.

thanx guys...
Reason for adding another sub is partly for more bass and partly to tidy it up in the boot. I prefer the full width look and I'm sure adding another 10" sub will do no harm. Also it will mean I can bridge my 4 channel amp and use both outputs.. my raptor is a single voice coil.(arguably wrong choice, in hindsight a dual coil would have been better)
john - it could take more power, 200 watts rms, is the power rating.
I think I'll be using 2 boxes with a false front. looks probably better that way as there's no way I'm going to improve on DB audio's box given that they've designed it for that sub.

thanx again

Get some software called Blaubox (I searched, don't have a URL to hand but it's free Blaupunkt software) and have your subs' details to hand, that'll plot response curves and tell you how big your box should be.

Excellent program. Used it many times!

Nick, I've been about, just busy sorting out my claim. Always the way - just got the car sound exactly how I wanted it and I go and write the thing off

Probably be an amp rack, sub box and door builds for sale soon.....

It was my RB5 - I'd just got it sounding exactly how I wanted

Bass wasn't too difficult, but then I had an Alpine PXA-H600 processor to help out, plus very well powered amps!
