Hi,

I followed the advice on here and got some 605cs for my front doors.

I must be really dim or something but I cannot see anyway that they drop straight in, not without making some sort of bracket to reach out to the existing three threaded holes.

I put the old speakers back after an hourlong battle with that metal spacer...

When I get a chance I'll try again, this time with some MDF and jigsaw to make a spacer.

I'm reluctant to cut the existing wire if I can help it - anyone know where I can get plugs like the one already on the speaker to put on my own wiring, I wouldn't even know what they're called?

Also there's already a tweeter in the door with it's own wiring, can I just connect those wires and the wires from the big speaker into the crossover together ?

Apart from the frustration of the speaker not fitting the instructions from here and Chiarks FAQ are superb and saved me a lot of time removing the door and head unit.

Cheers

Chris

Are you sound proofing the door too, if so how much do you have to sound proof?

I am going to be in the same boat, as I am going to be getting some this weekend.

people help us out.

I have just put in a set of Rockford Fosgate Fnx1614's into my front doors of my My99 Sti-v, cutting the wiring is the easiest way of doing things, if you use block connectors it's really easy to put things back to standard if you so wish....

I have no experience of the Infinity's but be v careful when installing the crossovers if you are putting them inside the door skin make sure the window can wind up and down without fouling up the crossovers or the wiring, I mounted my crossovers between the door skin and the door trim and it fits like a dream, had to make a mdf ring tho as the Mids were way too deep to get into the holes without the window hitting them, also the mounting points were different too which was a pain in the a!!!

Go to www.caraudiodiscount.com they sell dynamat for about £15 per roll, they were doing a special deal on it, prob not worth it if you are running standard stereo's tho as the sound difference in negliable.

I got the boys at Powerstation to fit mine while they were doing other stuff. Their guy was an experienced audio installer, but cos he hadn't done an MY01 before it took him 2hrs, ages on the first and half hour on the second - This meant the labour cost was almost as much as the speakers!!

I bought them on recommendation from here too and the fact that they drop straight in - but its never that easy is it. He smiled when I told him that too. I didn't watch it all but I know the window mech would not clear the back of the speakers so he moved the mech out by putting washers behind the nut that's bottom right on the door. If that helps.

My advice would be to seek out an audio installer that charges a fixed price for fitting speakers, Halfords might do it. That way they learn about your model of car in their time not yours. To be honest for £40 or whatever, its worth it to avoid the hassles that you found. Plus you never have all the bits you need, connectors, cable ties, wire etc. Let someone else worry about it is my advice.

They are good and an improvement but as the guy said to me - you really need to chgange your headunit to take advantage of these.... That'll be way down on my wish list though. More horsepower 1st!!

Happy Hyperion Hippo:

I've got one of the doors sound proofed !

To be honest I'm struggling to tell the difference between the two doors - this is with the original speakers and a simple 35W JVC headunit. I expect with uprated speakers and more power the difference may be more apparent.

The stuff I used wasn't dynamat either - some black rubberry stuff about 2mm thick - a bit like the stuff all over the inside of the boot. It cost £2 per sheet and I reckon I can fit 3.5 sheets in each door.

For the cost and the ease of installation there's little point in not doing it if your taking the door panel off.

Maybe when round two of the speaker installation begins I'll get some Dynamat and fit that as well!

Thanks for all the comments.

I didn't think to ask someone else to install the speakers - Doh!

I think JZA got someone in Leicester (same town as me) to fit his - but with search down it'll take me a while to find it - at least I know they learned how to do MY01 on someone elses car !!!

Cheers

Just a silly thought - you are trying to use the plastic mounting pods from the original speakers, aren't you?

The standard subaru speakers are in a plastic pod. Unscrew the speakers from the pod (not the pod from the door) and they should fit.

My apologies if you have done this already and are still struggling.

Chiark,

The original speakers seem to be one peice all metal - no plastic mount!

Thanks for the comment though.

Aha, a difference on the MY01. No chance of you taking a picture, is there?

I know people have fitted these in MY01s, but dunno how. Sorry to be useless

Ok mate -get down to car electronics ltd off the welford road - and ask for a "Corsa" spacer. This will allow you to fit the speaker easily.

You MUST dynamat at the same time or its gonna shake rattle and roll!!!!

I got them to fit everything!!

Great guys - they'll talk you through how to do it yourself!!

Round two is over - the moral vicotry is mine! Although on points the doors and original speakers still have it. Still got the original speakers in!

When I'm finally done I'll knock a FAQ up with parts on how to do this...but for two spade connectors I'd be there!

Thanks JZA - the corsa spacers do fit - the need some drilling to meet up with the existing threaded holes in the door, they also need a fair bit of cutting to get the speaker to sit in them.

Pretty sure the tweeters are going to drop straight on to the existing mount.

Two last questions before the final round....

How do I tell on the original speakers which terminal is positive/negative (they're not labelled) ? If it's any help - on the tweeter there are 3 (count 'em) terminals! one has what looks like a capacitor connecting it to the next terminal.

Does anyone know where the Subaru crossover is ? I think it's in the door but can't see it?

Cheers

That 'capacitor' is instead of a crossover, it's a cruder way to cut the current into the tweeter. In my car the +'ve feed from the headunit was red/yellow striped for left and right. I think -'ve was white to the left and green to the right.

another thought - I think it is usual for the +'ve spade connector on the speaker to be bigger than the -'ve so look to see what wire is attached to these. Hope this helps.

Boost :

Thanks for that, what you say implies that there will be no crossover present already. I expect this means I can use the wiring from the big speaker straight into the crossover that came with the Infinities...Thanks for the tip.

Cheers
