Boot Install: Subs Facing Seat or Out into The Boot?
Hi guys,
Just having a bit of a sort out with the sounds at the moment, and in so doing it got me thinking.
At the moment, I've got my two 12" subs facing the back of my rear bench. As there is not metal between the sub and cabin only the foam of the sub my thinking was this would deleiver the best sound, or thud.
But, am I right, or should the subs being facing out into the boot?
I've had installs in my other cars, and changed the set up accordingly. But with the Impreza I'm really not sure.
So whats best?

facing in to the boot surely having it facing the rear bench will muffle and distort the sound
best thing to do is take the rear speakers out and juast leave the holse so more sound comes through

I'm not too sure, I'm thinking that the foam of the rear bench will insulate the sound and give it a more pronoucned thud. If I have it facing into the boot it will give more or a boom.
I'm gonna give both a try I think and see which one sounds better.
I've got 6x9's in my parcel shelf. Need them to counter the bass

I change for an enclosed box and the different was clear, so much more power, a more destinct thud.

Surely the subs will be pumping the rear of the cones of the 6X9 and make them sound terrible? Better to remove the rear speakes as suggested and vent the bass into the cabin, Face the sub out into the boot will sound better.

If you are having subs in the boot remove the 6x9s otherwise it will throw the whole setup up out as the air being moved by the sub(s) will interrupt the cone of the 6x9s as previously said and will distort them badly.Either have one or the other not both

Deep base doesnt exactly have a direction of travel so it won't matter where the subs are facing to be honest.
I have a mate thats proper into his audio he has a £40K sound system in his house, his speaker cable alone is £1000 a meter, Nordost something or others.
Anyway my point is he has two cars both of which are running very high end Nakamichi set ups. He as a very special Norris Designs Evo but his everyday car is a Mint 93 MR2 which he's had from brand new. The MR2 has like i said a high end Nak setup with a valve DAC (tri vista valves) with Kef Kar components and a JL W6 which is in under the bonnet at the front of the car. It sounds trully incredible even though the sound from the dub has to travel through the bulkhead.
The trick is to get the balance right between the subs and the full range.
My own car for instance just has some ADS components in the front and two Kenwood subs no rears. The imaging is very very good. But it took ages to get right miss alignment of the trebles ruined the sound coming from the subs as daft as that sounds.
Once everything was lined up and the system set up correctly it sounded very well indeed.
Food for thought.

I have tried both ways in a classic STI 5
I had two Orion HCCA 12's in a sealed box & it definately sounded better facing into the boot. Subs were angled in a V shape. Tried ported but after various configurations gave up & the sealed design worked a lot better for my setup. I can say I have spent ages trying different designs in the boot & the sealed versions seem to come out on top for me. It will also depend on the design of the sub & whether its suited to a ported or sealed box (might make your choice a lot simpler).

I have a sealed box with 15" Cerwin Vega Stroker firing through the ski hatch in my rear seats. Rest of boot is built with install.
As Andy says - depends on design of sub and box suited.
And how well the box or build is fixed and insulated to the car.
Bass is unidirectional and will only be noticable to you. Try both and see what sounds better
At 33hrz my windows need to be open because of the pressure in the car!
But still i'm upgrading my amps for better quality

I have 2 8" subs built into a false floor behind the passenger seat pointing upwards in my car and it sounds fantastic but i wouldn't have upwardly facing subs in the boot.Try them in diferent positions and see what sounds best for you

Either way i dont think there is a major difference in which way subs face it is all dependant on what type of box you use. it should be the right size and type (sealed or ported), and wheather the sub is being driven/powered properly by the amplifier.
personally i prefer the tight and controlled sound gained from a sealed enclosure, especially in an impreza.

Well, I've been running my subs facing into the boot for a week now, and I must say for my set up it's much better.
I've got two 12inch cerwin vegas in sealed lined boxs and the bass is considerable more punchy.
Just got to re design my boot installnow so it looks right, dam. Well this project ever finish!!!
