with being totally new to pugs in general and unable to register with the 205gtidrivers club i dont know where to start... the exterior aerial is one of those long bendy ones sat in an adjuster pod at the roof end to change the angle it sits at. does it need unscrewing or something. its well beyond my intelligence radio signlas and the like

I'd first pull the radio out and see if the plug for the aerial is in. I would think the radio has a pair of holes on either side to get the withdrawal keys in and then just pull it out of the dash.

Sorted it?
If not, check the wire going from the aerial to the radio, and the earthing of the aerial too.
What you describe is what I get if I forget to put my Scoob aerial up

right i popped to my local motor world as they seem more helpful than halfrauds. the guy had a look and along with me agreed that there didnt seem to be a radio wire. on the sony unit (knackered one) that was in the car when bought, there wasnt anything plugged into the back for a radio signal. having fondled behind the fasia into and around the centre console, i couldnt find any tucked in wires etc. so from a novice it seems there isnt a radio signal wire or anything to resemble one.
unless i spoke to an audio specialists who could figure out whats going on, im stumped.

OK, you'll need to get at where the aerial is fitted and maybe trace back from that. I assume this is what you mean when you say "radio wire"?
Thinking back, I'm sure my old GTi didn't have a roof aerial, it was on the front wing IIRC.
Anyway, the cable's thick, around 6mm, usually black with a plug on the end with one long pin sticking out of it.
If you get totally stuck, I can recommend Audio Island in Brigg.

if you look at the interior light in the middle on the roof, prise it off with a screw driver, will pop out easy. then you will see where the ariel is bolted to the roof with a 10mm bolt or so, there should be a cable bolted underneath that and that cable should run across the roof and down the front pillar and to behind where the radio is.

On the 205 the antenna coax goes to the passenger rear quarter where there is a little signal booster/ junction box that it plugs into from it there is an extension lead that goes to the passenger footwell kick panell where there is another extension to the back of the radio.
You need to check that all of this is present. and then make sure that the antenna has a good earth, do this by twisting the base back and forth a couple of times from the inside. some antennas were boosted and others not, but if it is boosted it will need the wire that is for the auto ant on the back of the stereo connecting to it, you'll know if it is because there will be a wire coming from the booster box on the rear qtr. there may be two wires but i think the earth will be on a ring connector earthed to the base of the booster or close to it..hope this helps

i did remove said interior light mentioned in a previous post. there is a thick pink wire (approx 4-5mm thick) which connects to an ovalish shaped plug from the exterior antenna. this leads right under the drivers roof lining. i tried to get under it but heard cracking and thus stopped boefre damage occured.
i think it may be a drawn out process, so will leave it until chris can afford a bit of time on it.
