Default Thinking of upgrades but what to?

I'm not the sharpe in the tool department when it comes to ICE.

I wouldn't mind upgrading my head unit to replace the OEM unit. And at the same time looking at upgrading the speakers all round.

Whats the best ones out there for both speakers and head unit? I don't want anything too cheap but don't see the point in spending a bomb on the stuff as I rarley have it on.

The speakers need to be able to cope with the odd Prodigy,RHCP adn Killers tunes. But also be good enough for me to play my little boys CD with In the night garden etc (not kidding).

Whats the ball park for having these fitted by a ICE installer?

any advise welcome

Diamond speakers are generaly ok, like most companys the have good stuff, excellent stuff and then theirs always the cheap junk to cater for everyone.
virtualy every speaker has a different sound to it and one of the hardest things is to decide which is best. the main reason for this is that when you go ino places like halford's or (insert local shop name here) all the speakers are mounted in displays, the speaker is sat in nice 1cu ft sealed box that lets it play bass, take it out and stick it in a flimsy car door with around 4 times as much room and it will sound completly different. Most decent car audio shops now have demo cars, this is one of the best ways to pick a pair thats right for you

I've had Alpine head units before and always thought they were the dogs dangley's, had Pioneer too and also very good. Previous head units I've had have had a mid range control aswell as bass and treble. It makes a difference, some also have a built in DSP.

As for speakers Focal, MB Quart and Infinity are good chioces in the component set ranges and I've always been pleased with their sound. However they were powered with a Rockford amp and never direct from the stereo. Never been to keen on Sony car equipment, always thought it sounded tinny. But as previously stated above, sound is a personnal choice.
