Default dvd headunit, viewing on the move

ok got my headunit off ebay, was actually quite surprised at the quality. anyway fitted it and to my surprise/delight i was able to view the dvd whilst driving however as it got dark tonight i put my lights on and the screen went blank n told me to stop to watch video.
i want to be able to watch it both during the day and with my lights on at night. could anyone help me out or had this problem?
i really think it strange it cuts out when the headlghts/sidelights go on.

i know it is illegal to view these on the move, however so is speeding etc. and by viewing i dnt mean my eyes glued to it as i did not buy it for watching dvds but listening to music videos.

any ideas or proven solutions welcome as the nights draw in lights will be on more regularly

cheers in advance

sounds like you have wired it wrong. Check the illumination wire at the back of the headunit

which unit did you get? some of them need the brake control wire(the one you`re supposed to connect to handbrake to watch tv) connected to the battery negative to work..

yeah sounds like the brake wire has been put on the illumination wire, hence turn the lights on and it loses the earth it see's on the wire.

This sounds like the same one I got off eBay? Only trouble is that my screen doesnt work at all. When you press the open/close button, naff all happens other than a whirring sound. The cd player and radio works fine, but other than that, nada

I've mailed the seller but so far got no reply...bah indeed

Mine did exactly the same thing, in the end I just forced it out manually (stupid thing to do I know). Magically started working with the buttons after that lol. Only things I don't like much about my model is turning shuffle on as you have to have the screen open & then use the remote, also if you have more then 250 songs in 1 folder it only shuffles the first 250... I tried putting batches of 250 in different folders but then it only plays the folder you have selected lol, doesn't shuffle to others.

I also have that headlight problem, although I rarely use it to watch videos so doesn't bother me to much

Oh and another thing I don't like is the next/prev song button on the right side, if you don't press it correctly it skips the song instead of changing it lol oh well can't really complain only cost me £200 altogether and that included a rear view camera and a freeview box

yeah thats the one i got. 230 just for the headunit. Damn.

do you recieve the tv channels with yours?

all i did was connect the iso and ariel adaptor so surely couldnt have wired it wrong??

do you play music off an SD card?

so none of us have it working correctly then yet lol

i wouldnt force the screen out as i had to cut my dash a bit 178mm. remove the facia etc and see if the screen will open when it has nothing to obstruct it. the whiring etc you hear is teh screen trying to open which makes me thinbk theres something stopping it. i put sum packers behind the bolt holes on teh cage to bring it out a bit from the dash.

I wired it up whilst it was in my lap, so nothing blocking it. i wondered if there was something screwed in place that you need to unscrew first, but cant see anything.

I can pick up the analougue tv channels 1-5 from the unit yeah but really bad signal from most places so i just use the freeview box, kinda pointless really as it doesn't keep the signal at all when moving and thats the only time I would really watch it (glance at it :P).

I use dvd+rw's for the music. Seem to get skipping problems after a few weeks with other types of dvd's.

Don't think you've wired it wrong, what 'incarsolutions' said is probably on the right track with it. If you still have the manual that came with yours, there's something about the brake wire/line on the first couple of pages about it, maybe that can help?

labpedro, if you bought your unit off a guy with the ebay name mybesteshop then i asked him teh same thing as you did before I pulled the screen out manually. He just said make sure its got power going to it? iicr.

I can't remember if it made any whirling noise or whatever when I pressed open when trying to get it open when it wouldn't. I think it might have. I can remember it making noise like it didn't want to come out when i forced it out tho, thought i may have broken it... but it was fine after that. Maybe I just got lucky?

right...the guys answered today, and said..

"Hi, Ray,

Since it is a brand new unit, the grease/lubricant may be too thick on certain point of the mechanism, which may hold back the sensitive screen from opening.

You just need to press the OPEN button, then gently pull the screen to assist until it comes out fully. Repeat a few times, the screen will open and close freely by itself.

Please have a try and you will be fine.

Thanks a lot."

I'll nip out after the footie and have a go

Its going to be in the wiring of the set, you'll probably find the park brake wire already in the iso plug (in the illumination position) which is why it works without the lights on, as that wire see's ground and switches to 12v when the lights are on.
Its usually a pink or green wire and all you need to do is link it straight to the earth cable feeding the stereo and all wil be fine (making sure you disconnect it from the illumination wire first)

as ICS has said, in the iso connector that came in the box with the stereo is a wire that will be attached to the lighting circuit...it will take a small feed through when the lights are on...if you locate the wire, u simply need to cut the wire, and splice it into an earth.
