From: Nottingham - HEY scumbag, leave my scoob alone!!!
Car Audio Direct is the place for all car audio kit, excellent service and quality products. I've used them many times.
As for speakers, I have Genesis Profile 16's fitted to my front doors, they have a lovely smooth sound even at high volumes, you do need to do some 'modding' to get these speakers to fit as the depth of the mid bass will catch the window mechanism without adapter rings. Sound proofing makes all the difference with the sound quality, do both the outer and inner skin of the door.
My old speakers were Infinity 605CS, these fitted straight into the doors without any modification, but could not handle the power being put through them.
I removed my rear speakers years ago this allows the sub to breathe in the boot, again sound proofing in the boot will make a big difference, a good sound stage can be achieved with just front speakers, as long as the kit you are using is of a good quality. The Genny's are being powered by a DLS Classic CA23 amp (2 x 135watts RMS) and my sub is an RE SX12 powered by an RE 12.1 (1200watts RMS into 1 OHM), split charge system, 0awg cables.

Wow, thanks for an honest and full answer BigRed, greatly appreciated, its nice to see what others generally use. I'll def have a look on the Car Audio Direct Web Site once I know what to plump for, it's interesting to see what your using to power yours with too as I think my sub is just about ok, just so was actually thinking about upping that at the same time.
I also appreciate Tanyatriangles we all have different likenesses on sound but I thought only a certain few fit in our doors hence the asking ?.. I had a look last night and the front doors already have dynamat on them as do the rear parcel shelf and the underneath of the boot lid so thats a bonus.. Cheers

Mine, for example, has 16.5cm units in
And DO try and listen to some before buying, you might be pleasantly surprised and so might your pocket

ive just had a set of DLS x-bs2 component speakers for the front, £200 quid, 17 cm size, so spacers required, but the general concensus is that you should do away with the rear speakers completely and spend extra cash on the fronts and put an amped sub in the boot for low freqencies.
try www.caraudiosecurity.com they have some real bargains on there, and they are very quick with delivery, and very helpful on the phone, just for example, the alpine 12 inch type r sub is 94.99, halfrauds want 179.00 for exactly the same item.

Halfords audio prices are just silly.
They should only be used to do comparisons, there is really no need for them to charge what they do, when specialist shops can do as well, or much better

I went into Halfords today, their choice is totally rubbish.. Ok so, back to the 17cm ones, do all 17cm ones fit, but its just that some need spacers bought/made as they are too deep but it is possible to make them fit with a bit of work ? If so I'm just going to just going with a pair and hope! I guess if I go middle of the road and not too cheap they are going to be pretty good, I'm just worried about their handling capacity as I don't understand the frequencies etc.. I don't have a huge sub at the mo and don't need a huge one, i think the one I have is about 800watt I generally listen to Rock etc so ldo ike bass but not boom boom.. cheers

Can I jump on this thread. Decided to treat the scoob to some decent speakers for xmas
All I want to do is to replace the standard ones I have in the classic (MY00) with some half decent ones. I dont want to be faffing around with spacers or modifying them. So which are ones to have and the place to buy them.
BTW I dont have any subs or rubbish like that
The boot is always needed for kids stuff

Back to my previous comment: find some YOU like the sound of. I've got Sony 3-way ones 'cos I like the sound and they were a LONG way short of £100
IIRC, you can buy spacers, Vauxhall Corsa, or maybe Nova ones fit. A decent ICE dealer will know.

Size DOES matter, but what makes MORE difference is decent sound deadening in the doors, and buying speakers YOU like the sound of

no matter what you fit ....its how they fit in with the rest of the system.
good speakers need a amp. No head unit will ever run good speakers. 75-150 REAL watts will do. damp the doors etc and fit some MDF baffles etc and you will be shocked at the level of bass they can produce.
best i ever fitted in a legacy where "Morel's" running off a Dual mono Genesis amp. Sounded fantastic to everyone. I kept the tweeters next to the bass/mids as i found it gave a better 'stage"
