Fitting CD player and tracking system
#1
I've just ordered a new MY00 from Intermoto in Liverpool (for delivery around the end of November at the MY99 price - hurry and they might have a couple left!). They've quoted me around £300 to fit a CD player. As I already have a perfectly good one one in my current car, I'd rather transfer it over myself and save the cash.
How easy is it to change the stereo in a Scooby (ie. does it come out easily or will I need to dismantle the whole dashboard), and is there any risk of invalidating my warranty?
I'd also like to have a tracking system fitted; can anyone please recommend a system and/or installer? Has anyone had their car stolen and recovered using one?
Regards,
Andy.

£300 for the Subaru (ie Phillips) CD player ?
Spend your hard earned on some decent kit. I'm no audiophile, and even I junked the standard kit. You can get yourself a very nice head unit and CD changer for £500 - I got an Alpine setup for that much, including fitting. Next step; bin those speakers. Aargh!

Andy,
The stereo is very easy to replace. All I needed to remove a friends stereo from a MY99 was 2 nails! We didn't have the v-shaped metal keys for a Phillips stereo.
They use standard connectors, so the plugs in the car fit straight on the back of an Alpine, or what have you!
Hope this helps

PS - Any problems email me - andytang@mailbox.co.uk

Sounds a bit tight on the part of your dealer to charge for fitting a CD player after you just parted with all that cash for a new scooby.
I contacted my dealer and asked if they'd fit a new audio system when I had my 1000 mile service last week. Got it fitted free no problem.
I'd give them a gentle nudge nearer your delivery date if I were you. As long as we're not talkin' amps & subs theres no reason why they shouldn't agree.

The £300 does include supplying the CD player as well! But since I have one already (not to mention a degree in electronics!), I reckon I'll do the job myself; thanks to all for your advice. Are the speakers straightforward to get at too?

Without going into a rant..
remove the Philips head unit and then apply flame/laser/dynamite until it is a heap of molten plastic.
The head unit is voted No.1 in the "worst sound quality" stakes..
