What would happen if someone had lost NCB because of an accident, declared the lesser amount to their new insurers, then found out that their old insurers had credited them with the same no claims as if there hadn't been a claim? Purely theoretical of course....

If you aproach a new company the likely outcome is that they will allow you whatever NCB the previous company is willing to give confirmation of, irrelevant of claims. You must of couse still disclose full details of any claims or you could be in deep doo doo.

I, err my friend, did forward the letter saying that he was entitled to 7 years NCB even though he had claimed 4. Still awaiting a response.

"I, err my friend" once had a not dissimilar situation. I'd got 5 years no claims, which was full NCB with my existing insurer. With the new insurer, full NCB was 7 years, so they said "we'll give you 7 years". I said "but I'm only 23!". They said "doesn't matter - full NCB is full NCB". I got name and date and left it at that.
Probably totally irelevant, and happened several years ago, but thought I'd post anyway.
