How many years no claims do I have
#1
When I got my VTS it came with 1 years free insurance and I hadn't had an insurance policy in my own name prior to that. I completed that year and was given a 6 year NCB by the company with the option to protect. I took this and subsequently bought the scooby because my insurance was very cheap given my age and lack of actual no claims.
Its now renewal time again and I've been fully insured in my own name for 2 years but still have my 6 years NCB. The renwal is still very good considering but I'm sure that I could do better if I phoned around declaring a 6 year no claims.
Can I legally do this? If I phone for quotes can I only say that I've got a 2 year no claims or can I say 6 given that thats what my current company have awarded me.
Thanks in anticipation

When you move to a new insurance company they ask for proof of NCB. But all they need to see is some official paperwork with the number 6 on it.
The problem is if they ask you when you passed your test and it was 2 years ago they might catch on.

Posted this earlier on another of your threads. I got the said letter from Citroen after being in the same situation as you with the free full no claims. Anyway, my confirmation letter said i had 8 years no claims, so I reckon yours would be the same.

I spoke to a guy from CI and asked how many years NCD I have. He said, '2 years but I see your on our discout scheme which gives you a 6 year bonus with us' - On this basis I'd feel a little uneasy saying I've got 6 years to any other company so I've been saying 2 years...this is why they aren't competative

Ask Citroen to send written confirmation to you about you amount of NCB's this way it avoids them saying 2 years, or 6 as your are on our discount scheme. What ever it says on the letter is the amount you have.
And, if you move insurer you will need written confirmation before your discount is taken into account anyway.

i had the same sort of thing with one of these 10 month bonus accelerator things where you get a year no claims after 10 months but when it came to changing they said oh no that no claims is only valid with us not anyone else so i then droped back to 1 years no claims so its a bugger i should have 4 years ncd but i only have 3

Kenny,
Ask CI if they will fax you a document stating what your NCD is. This will be the same document you would need to send to another insurer.
Some would just state 6yrs, others may differentiate between their bonus schemem and the actual number of years you have.
I had one with Admiral (1yr NCD already) and the document was accepted by Axa (now 2yrs, but only 1yr 10mths in real-life). They had another scheme, which gave me 5yrs NCD (after only 2yrs 10mths real-life). This was then accepted by Wren, so I will have 6yrs NCD next month come renewal.
Don't listen to the people on the phone, get them to fax you across the proof. That''s what counts and the particular wording will tell you what you can do.

The renewal was very reasonable for my age and car so I renewed this morning as its due tomorrow! Lots of good advice here and I'll get written confirmation next year by which time I'll be 25. I should then be able to search for a competative quote elsewhere
