jap import insurance
#1
Hello All
I'm the new boy today!
I'm looking to buy an early subaru. K reg 2 litre turbo. Looks like a nice car by all accounts. Anyway. Today I looked into insurance. Now I didn't expect it to be cheap but I was quoted 4 grand. Yep £4000!!!! Nice eh!
I'm 23 3 years no claims bonus. Live in Croydon south London
What would be a sensible quote?
Also why are Jap imports so expensive to insure?
Can anyone recomend a company that would be a little more sensible?
I'd appreciate anyones comments
Thanks
Mark

From: South Wales - Stuck on this rollercoaster, get me off!!
markie boy try ringing all the performance co's in the back of
the mags such as adrian flux, performance direct, greenlight etc, but i think your best bet is going to be tesco's, they except scoobies uk andjap imports but either will have to have a tracker fitted for them to quote on the risk.
as for how much your going to pay is a little more difficult, living in south london is not a good start, any area near london
will warrant a higher prem than anywhere in the uk so if the car
has good security and hopefully will be garaged these will all aid
in lowering any premium, other discounts you could get are a low
annual mileage, experience in driving performance cars and voluntering a higher excess in addition to the compulsory excess.
an educated guess i think you'll be looking to pay £1200 - £1500
comprehensive, unless you go tpf+t it will be lower.
some of the reasons why jap imports are more expensive is unfortunately most ins companies are under the impression that
the parts cost more when comes to repairing these cars, resulting
from a accident, theft etc. also most importantly the jap cars
come with a few more horses under the bonnet and likely to have
been felted with back in the land of the rising sun.
p.s when you start getting quotes off comapnies and then going to the next they will ask you what has been your lowest quote so far?
tell them but knock a few notes off that figure and they will still
hopefully try to beat it.
let me know how you got on, goodluck m8.

I don't think 4k is a bit above what I would expect it to be. Considering your age, 3 NCB's, high crime area, group 20 car I would expect 2k - 2.5k would be better.
Try having a look here for other insurance quotes from members of Scoobynet.
The reason Jap imports are more to insure than UK models is down to the power output. From what I remember UK turbo's have out 240BHP where as WRX Imports have over 270BHP. Also I think that parts might have something to do with it.
Hope this helps

You will get it less than £2000! Im 21 with Tesco on my import and i was quoted £2000 FC in a high risk area and £1500 TPFT.
Needed a tracker monitor atleast.
tesco is definitely going to be your best bet

wow, thats terrible....I am also 23 and my insurance is less than half that on a TypeR.
My quote is £1800 FC on a year 2000 STI-6 TypeR valued at £18,000.
This quote is from Tesco and requires a Cat1 alarm and a tracker. Try them, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly suprised.
I guestimate you should get it down to about £1200 as the WRX is much cheaper to insure than the TypeR.

I tried tescos today and they quoted me 1360 tpft. Still not sounding superb.
Money, where abouts is it you live? Do you reckon croydon is higher risk perhaps?
Who could I get to have an insurance quote battle with Tesco's. That is the question. I'll have to have a phone around I spose!
Thanks all
Markie
