Insurance Group for MY03
#1
Hi there,
Went to see the new MY03 at my local dealer today (after seeing it at the motorshow) and got a price list and had a little talk with the guy there. He said that the MY03 WRX is in Insurance Group 19, and the STi group 20!! This sounds a little excessive, is it correct?
Also, I see they're doing an "SL" model as of June, which includes Leather, heated seats and a sunroof - all for £1,500 over the basic car.

same as what my local dealer said, but added that might change if the insurance companies approve the deadlocks, like the froester and that dropped two groups.
would then be back in the same group as the classic shape
could be months if the insurance companies what even more profit

The bugeye WRX, as I understand it, was a bit complex. Allegedly on launch was G17, apart from the UK300 which was G19. But allegedly, all the insurance co's jsut decided to count it as G19 for all WRX's, and several people have found bugeyes pricier to insure than classics, which bears this out. STis have always been G20.
You'll only mod it, so what are you worrying about insurance for?

The insurance grouping generally depends on the insurer concerned because many have their own scales (For example Groupama have it down as a group 60 !?!), but the official ABI grouping for the Bug-Eye WRX is a 19.
A lot of dealers naughtily tell people its a 17 like the previous model, some mags (like TG) show it as a 17 too...not true !
The UK STI is a 20.
I totally agree that a 19 is a bit harsh when compared to the 'Classic' shape Scooby, but I suppose many have gone walkies and/or have been stuffed and obviously insurers want a bit more brass in the kitty for this kind of risk. Bu99er !!
Haven't heard anything about a grouping change for the new WRX III - will post anything if I hear it from Subaru.
I think that Subaru do need to do something about it though when you consider the opposition that now exists.
Focus RS - Group 16
Leon Cupra R - Group 17
Nissan 200SX - Group 18
Honda Prelude 2.2 VTI - Group 18
Civic Type-R - Group 16
Okay, none of those are AWD jobbies, but they are in the same 'affordable performance' bracket and the high grouping of the Scooby may put a lot of people off, especially when most insurers want £500 worth of Tracker system too..
Mind you, it can make Scoob ownership a little bit more exclusive - although rather expensive.
Hope this helps,
John

If that's right then it's not too bad, as I've been getting quotes for a bugeye and if that's a Group 19 too, it should be pretty much identical for the new model. Sound about right?
