Question

Having terrible trouble trying to get a quote for my '99 WRX STI 5 Type RA V-Ltd.
Tried all the usual Scooby suspects.
Im either getting "sorry your car is not on the list so we cant insure you" or "sorry we dont insure those"

Im with Direct line ATM which isnt a bad policy price (£670), but they insist on a tracker before covering me for theft full stop.
As I live on the Isle of Man I dont think its worth forking out for a tracker at all. We have almost zero car crime over here, and yes it may get nicked but where are they gonna go?!
And I'll bet the trackers dont even work over here!

Today Ive tried Liverpool Vic - car not on list
Greenlight - no answer
Bell Direct - we dont insure those, tranferred me to Kwik Fit insurance (!) took details, insist on CAT 1 and tracker, but havent got back to me.
Keith Michaels - took details but havent got back to me.
Norwich Union - car not on list
Schofield Ins - took details, phoned me back with silly quote (£1000) if I get a CAT1 alarm, and even sillier quote!(£1100) as it is with no security.

So, apart from selling it a getting a Fiesta! what do I do?
What are other RA owners insured as?
Do I just insure it an Import 4dr STI and hope for the best?
Cant really go back to any of them now and state a different model, as I got the usual speech "all insurance companies share your details between them to help stop fraud.....blah blah"

My current policy runs out on the 14th, so need to get it sorted!

It gets better!

Just tried the AA as I got a reasonable online quote from them, but again they didnt have the correct model.

The guy asked "is it an import?"
I relied that it was.
He then said "sorry we dont insure imports"
I replied "Well you have other WRX and STIs on your list, and up until the STI type UK was released in about 2001 (IIRC) these are ALL imports!!"

He wouldnt have any of it!

What are these people on?
Why dont they seem to know what theyre talking about FFS?!

Thumbs up

Ring A-Plan 0845 0711234, I got my MY99 STi Ra V-Limited insured with them.
They have the car listed on the database and my certificate states the exact model.

Liverpool Vic told me (after ringing them several times) that they DO NOT insure ANY Type R's or Type RA's and only "stock" Sti's
I was told anyone that does have insurance with them and has an R or RA isn't properly covered in the event of a claim

Makes me wonder how many people have R's and RA's with them thinking they are insured. I had this confirmed by a manager there.

Anyway A-Plan worked out just £200 more than I was paying for my MY99 UK car

Unhappy

Just had another 2hrs of frustration ringing round places on the phone

Tried A-Plan, they gave me a not too bad quote, but wanted a minimum £500 excess!!! Its not worth being insured with that really is it?!
Would also need a CAT 1 system fitted...
(Any ideas how much this would be?)

Got a possible good one from a broker based in London, but the guy said the company that he needed to ring wasnt open on Saturday, so gotta ring him back on Monday.

Ah well, any other R or RA owners got any more info on their policies?

BTTT for me.....!

You need at least a Cat1 on these cars, for your own piece of mind not just insurance!

Question

Liv Vic: I've just received a quote from them for an STi V Type-R MY99, with mods, for around £940 (33yrs, 9yr NCD, Surrey). On their on-line facility they have listed WRX STi (import) 2 door, which is (I'll stand corrected if not!) the Type-R. Further down the list, there is the WRX RA MY2000+ version, so for them to say they don't cover Type-R/RA's is confusing!?!

Also got a quote from Osborne's @ £1125 (err, no) and waiting now for A-Plan.

Hi Matt.

Yep, Ive been finding that very confusing all around the different companies. They just dont seem to know what is an import and what isnt.
I think I must have filled out about 20 different online quote forms, and usually end up having to phone the places for confirmation of something. I then get told that they dont insure imports, (when they clearly have them on their lists!) WTF??!!
I just tend to get a "I dont know sir, Im afraid we cant help you" kind of answer, which is really pi55ing me off!

I even emailed the General Insurance Standards Council the other day, asking them whats the score with these vehicle lists.
Only to recieve an 'Out of office reply' straight back...!

As for Liverpool Vic, they told me my car wasnt on their list so couldnt cover me. Yes they have the '2-door STI import' (sounds like a Type R) and the 'WRX RA year 2000 onwards' Well mines an STI Type RA NOT a WRX Type RA. These are different models, and its also 1999 not '...2000 onwards'
Grrrrrr............!

I'll wait and see if I get anything back from the 'Council I suppose...

Hi Mark,

I've given up on the on-line quotes as they all 'break down' 3/4's of the way through and suggest "I ring them" to see if they can help. Basically, it's as soon as you put in that your car is an import!

This was the first time that I had ever spoken to Liv Vic, so I was expecting "we don't cover that car sir" but she never said it. Goes against what you and others are experiencing? Maybe worth another try and see if you get somebody else? Or a different postcode?

A-plan have yet to get back to me, but they did my friend driving an Evo VI a good deal, so I'm expecting something around the Liv Vic quote.

However, my current insurers have said they will cover me for less than the Liv Vic quote!! This is just £100 more than my current premium, covering my now written off MY98 UK T2000. If true, then this saves me alot of money as if I'd transferred my insurance I would have lost £450 because the remaining premium is cancelled after a write-off.

Cheers
