I just called Tesco to find out how much extra I needed to pay to change my insurance from an S reg Sport, to a brand new WRX (03) and they only want another £250 Thats for 10 months insurance - very surprised.

Anyway, when I was looking at the website, it was asking if it had a Tracker, so I thought I would need one fitting. But, the guy at Tesco said that the standard CAT1 alarm already fitted was enough. I go him to confirm that with his supervisor and he said that was indeed the case.

Any thoughts?

my renewal in december will be around £880 aparently. Fantastic considering two years ago I was driving an old Polo and still paying £900!

Either get the full names of the advisor and supervisor you spoke to or get it in writing, this way you can safeguard them changing their mind before its too late.
I'm insured with tesco my99 type r and they require a tracker, a mate has a uk my95 wagon and when he rang them for a quote they would not touch it without a tracker.

They are always moving the goalposts, as usual the premium payers have to grin and bare it.

I'm with TESCO, when I got the quote I asked if I needed a tracker or if I got a discount with one fitted (you never know!!), they said I didn't need a tracker for full comp. and no discount. When I checked the small print (after paying, fully comp.) I wasn't covered for theft without one!!

They told me I didn't need a tracker.. asked them 2 confirm this... he went away to check came back said definately no tracker required.
Paid up... paper work came bout week later, says 'no theft cover until certificate of tracker fitment' recieved.. :-(

Phoned up 2 check/complain.. they didn't wanna know just said fit a tracker or have a refund.

U need to get em to ask the underwriters.. the call centre people don't seem 2 know much.

I see, I dont know about the call centre not having the info, it sounds to me like a bit of a shady sales tactic to me.

Oh well, kind of planned and bugeted for one anyway (well sort of!)

I was told immediately when i changed my car on my Tesco policy that it would not be covered for theft until the tracker was fitted.

Just depends who you speak to I suppose!

Superdon,

Try getting the same quote on the website (meant to be 5% cheaper as well). You'll find, unless you select one of their listed tracking devices, you cannot proceed. I'm with Direct Line, who are basically underwriting Tesco's. They insisted that I fax them a copy of the installation certificate. It's as everyone's said, no Tracker and they won't cover for theft.

By the way, mine's up for renewal with Direct Line on the 28th, £648, me & the wife, one Sp30 and one claim, so far nobody else has been under a grand. Any ideas or am I expecting too much?

Cheers
Nick

I was only saying what I was told, and I also said in my first post I found it hard to believe.

I am expecting to have to have one fitted, so its not a problem.

Warning - long rambling diatribe.

Although cheap (478 quid in my case, 98MY UK Turbo) Tesco's seem afflicted with a total inability to run an insurance business. They can do beans, and soap powder, and even those nice potato wedges, but they can't seem to quite get the hang of insurance.

Mine is insured with a Tracker Retrieve. That's what they insisted I had at the time (June 2001) so that's what I got. I sent off the proof of installation, and proof of having the immobiliser, and they sent back at various intervals letters saying I wasn't covered for theft because I hadn't sent them anything.

Then eventually they sent me a letter saying they'd got what I'd sent them, and it was satisfactory, and here was the documentation I'd sent them. Except it wasn't enclosed. Then when I complained they said they'd definitely had it, once, but couldn't find it and they were fairly sure they'd given it back to me. They'd sent back the proof of no-claims, the Tracker doc and the immobiliser doc, all separately. None ever arrived.

I've got the letter from them that says they are satisfied with my proof of having an approved Tracker, and they've never mentioned changing it.

They are good at beans though.

What happens when I sell the car - will Tracker issue a replacement doc ?

Don't do that ! You wouldn't be covered for theft as they would argue its not your own address even though you do live there

I am just about to buy insurance through Tesco and all this talk of trackers has put me in a bit of a spin.

I have had a Tracker Retrieve fitted to my MY96 WRX (first ever Scooby....very happy!!) and at the time they said a Tracker Retrieve was fine....they then changed their mind and said a Tracker Monitor was the minimum.....and now they have reverted back to their original decision and said a Retrieve is enough. The fact it was already fitted to the car helped.

My insurance was £892.00 - not bad considering I'm 22, a girly, only 4 years NCD and it's my first "proper" car....

888 - £892 sounds good for your circumstances - lucky I got the Retrieve on in time for you.

How did they react to you putting your occupation down as a "Geolist" (profile)??

Was it on their list of recognised professions?

Cool

Very good Gussie Cup.....not only are you good at organising trackers to be fitted (cheers by the way!) but you are also a dictionary!
