Why are m3 evolutions so expensive to insure???

Does anyone have experience of insuring a BMW m3 evo(e36)?
Best quote I have had is £1700, which is nearly double what the scooby cost to insure.
26, 5 yrs NCB, 9 points ( 3 fixed penalties- 1 nearly 5 years ago), medium postcode, 10k pa, professional occupation, tracker, cat 1 etc...why the hell are these so pricey to insure...an evo 6 is evn less.....Im bamboozled.....anyone able to guide me to a sub £1k insurer, or else there is about to be a very reluctant sale of an m3 evo! I just cant get over the 'principle' of paying £1700 for a car despite no claims accidents and good NCB etc...

Maybe it's cos they cost about £50k new and the Mitsubishi Evo was about £20k shy of that???? Maybe cos of it's higher bhp, desirability to thiefs etc. When it comes to car insurance quotes...sit down and get yourself a strong drink cos they never make sense!
I noticed myself when I was changing my car in the Spring, how much more expensive it was for the M3 and Escort Cossies against equal performance cars/insurance groups as well. In one case I got quoted £500 more for an N 96 Cossie against a w reg P1..WTF is that all about!
Cheers
