Question

Yep I know this subject has been done before but any quick advice from the "been there, got the T-Shirt" bunch would be welcome.

17 year old daughter just started driving lessons. My own old bangers not really suitable for her to practice in so bought a Ford Ka (2nd hand). Current insurers were happy to add her to our policy on one of our old wrecks for £150 pa but got all funny when I mentioned getting an additional small car for me to teach her. Have been on 'net and with car in her name (and parents as additional drivers). Direct Line £1074. Tesco £1132. We are in reasonable semi-rural postcode. Fully comp with car on driveway. Is this about right? Anyone else I could try? Thanks, David

Thumbs down

Looks about right to me.:

Hope my 17 year old doesn't see this thread: we can't afford a car for him to practise in, so he's down to lessons alone:
And his cousin has had a car, insurance, tax, and a good stereo system for the car, bought for her......and her parents pay all her fuel. Beats me....they spend all their time saying how hard up they are:

Try CIS (Co-op) They seem very reasonable for teenagers. I insured his Honda CRX ins. group 12 TPFT with him as additional driver for about £400 iirc.

David,
We will be in similar position shortly and have been looking at options. As my sons not yet 17 I have been trying Internet quote sites (insurers won't quote until he is actually 17).

We had a quote for a 1.1 106 worth about £1500 TPF&T with zero no claims, for myself and wife to drive of £160, great I thought, now just add my hypothetical 17 year old.........£2500

Pass plus might be worth looking into, this seemed to reduce the premium in some cases by as much as £400.

Allan

Lo all.

Just having turned 17 along with a twin sister who is also a complete petrolhead, my dad bought and old K-reg 1.1 Peugeot 106, for £700. had a huge range of quotes (as additional drivers), but the best we managed to get was £731 for all 4 of us. This was through Norwich Union Direct.

Incidentaly, just had a quote for adding me on to the main car (a Y-reg Volvo V70 2.5) was just an additional £400 on top of the original quote of £300 for parents.

Maybe we are just lucky that we live in the middle of nowhere, but a good deal of ringing around and juggling things about in the policy can result in large savings to be had.

If the policy is going to be in her name, make sure she does a pass plus, as Allanp stated what discount can be expected.

Thanks for all the comments. What I have done is cancelled the insurance on one of our "old wrecks" and insured the Ka in my name with wife and daughter as additional drivers. This was an extra £200 odd quid onto existing policy. I will then get a Tesco or similar cover for the old wreck just for me and missus. This will be around £320. I think this is fine whilst daughter is still living at home but situation will have to change when she flees the nest but by then she should have had a licence for a year or so and be older which might reduce the initial premium when she does it in her name as owner. So this will cost circa £500 extra rather than the £1000 plus mentioned in my first post. D

Wink

Just to complete the story I ended up insuring with Wilsons who I think are the same as Quoteline DIRECT which I found on the autotrader.co.uk (0870 4440870). They were helpful and competitive for what I wanted but horses for courses so may not suit others. David.

PS. I think the only real solution is not to have kids in the first place - but you don't think of car insurance at the time do you?

Exclamation

I'm 19 and have done the named driver on mum's policy on 'my' Impreza 1.6GL (group 10, MY95 and mint so probably worth £3k max) for the past 2 years - £1100 for the first and £900 for the second through CIS. Now I'm in my 2nd year at uni in Sheffield and the car is with me in a garage to a flat I own - going to be a bit tricky with the insurance if anything should happen to the car, hence I don't want to go down the named driver route again when I renew next month.

Now I'm faced with 0NCB and an S6 postcode on a group 10 car. Best quote is ~£1900 from Liv Vic. Will anyone actually be sensible and listen to my level of experience rather than typing 0NCB into their computer system?
What I mean is: 18000miles of incident free experience in the same car and also on my mum's company Impreza 2.0GL (group 13). Pass Plus (equivalent to 1yr NCB in some companys' eyes), passed IAMs test, no points, etc. Also the car has CAT1 security and is in a garage so I can't see the scumbags being a problem. Surely I'm a fairly safe bet if they actually listen to what I'm saying rather than stick it into the computer and crank the handle, but will anyone actually listen?!

Have tried the usual recommended bunch of big insurers, few are under £2k. Anyone know of a broker that might have some sense and hence end up getting my premium? Don't really see how I can make myself any safer in their eyes! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Ben

CIS give a 'first time' and pass plus discounts that amount to about 30% iirc. Or you could try Adrian Flux they seem reasonable with young drivers. All from my son's experience with gp 12 CRX VTEC.

Ben, have you tried Quoteline as above? It will only cost you a phone call to find out? David

PS Does your Students Union have any advice to offer?

Thanks for the replies.

Houghton - CIS comes out at £2000 even after the discounts, they aren't interested in the IAMs or the alarm.

David - Gave Quoteline a call but it came out as £2450. Thanks for the suggestion though. The students union has a branch of Endsleigh so I could try a face to face quote, I doubt I'd do any better than their online quote which was about £2500.

Cheers,

Ben

I would tend to think that you take the biggest hit in your first year! I’ve just turned 18 and have just paid £580 on a 1.4 Clio TPFT. This was initially, (for the first year) £1250, pass plus, taken right after my test meant we only paid £900 in total for the first year. Just out of interest I have had a look at Norwich Union Direct Online (my current insurance company) who also offer a rapid bonus policy which allows you to build 5 years NCB in just 36 months, paying £1075pa (fully comp) plus whatever they put on extra for the rapid bonus thing, which they cant tell you over the net.

Not that bad really

But then I’m not paying…
