Do I need to tell my insurers about replacing the OEM backbox with a Scorpion SS bbox? I mean, if I replaced it with a Kwik Fit mild steel box, I wouldnt expect to tell the insurers, or if I've changed the original Bridgestones to Firestones, so why a back box?

Why are you fitting the SS backbox ? Is it cos it looks nice or cos it improves performance etc.. !?
Yep, it is a mod and an insurer would need to know about it.. it not a case of the insurer looking for any excuse to not pay out - its more a case of the insurer knowing exactly what kind of risk you pose to them..
simple as that !
