Default Official!! black boxes are in cars! already!!

Please see the following article recieved via a trade publication..

this comes from the big four, so there is no reason to doubt its credibility

" INSURER OFFERS DISCOUNT ON VEHICLES WITH
DATA RECORDERS. Insurer Progressive Corp.is piloting a
plan in Minnesota that gives customers 5% to 25%
discounts if they let the company install data recorders that
measure such things as driving distance and vehicle speed
Last week the National Transportation Safety Board
suggested a similar idea. But in June the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration decided against mandating
such recorders because many OEMs are installing them
already. Consumer groups are worried about the privacy
implications of such devices.

wonder who the oems are!!!

and just what are they tracking...

nip its in the post!!!!

Norwich union are piloting a similar scheme over here, my mum is taking part in the pilot. You have a gps data recorder installed in the car and they reduce your current premium by 25% during the test period.
What they want to do is basically charge you insurance by how much you use your car, and constantly recalculate your risk using the new data recovered.

All sounds a bit big bro to me!

Was an article in the times on this technology today

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...218809,00.html ( need to register, but free)

"The company will also be able to monitor how many times a driver exceeds the speed limit. The car’s position will be transmitted to Norwich Union’s head office each second, allowing the company to measure the time taken to travel between any two points.

Robert Ledger, director of Norwich Union’s scheme, said that the company would not initially be penalising drivers who repeatedly exceeded the speed limit, for fear of losing customers. Mr Ledger said that the scheme was likely to be opened to all drivers from 2006 after Norwich Union had used the data from the trials to produce a price scale for different types of journey. "

"Norwich Union’s scheme is based on a system developed by Progressive, one of the largest insurance companies in America. Drivers who joined Progressive’s original pay-as-you-drive scheme reported that their insurance costs typically fell by 25 per cent.
Next week, Progressive will unveil a new version of the system which will offer drivers a discount on their premium if they obey the speed limit. Those who go over 75mph less than 0.1 per cent of the time will get a 5 per cent discount.

Progressive has decided to allow drivers to download their own journey data and then choose whether to send it in to obtain a discount. "
