Hey Guys,

Got some of the worst news you could possibly imagine today...

Rang up theAA for a quote on a 97 GL Wagon (without any mods) and im looking at 2941 quid!! im so gutted about this, if any one knows if the insurance may go down if i have a lower reg.

I think im going to have to wait a number of years to have one, whats any ones advice? Shall i look at Reno GT5's?? and build up no claims??

Anyway Lads, Going for a sulk!!!!

You have to be 30 and he is obviously not over 25 with that quote. Try tesco and directline.

AA are the most expensive around despite what the ad's say. Try Tesco, Direct Line, Liverpool Victoria or Argos to start with for a better quote.

If i remember correct ( from previous threads ) your 18 right ?

So in all fairness, youve only been driving a year or there abouts........insurance is going to be sky high on most cars.

To get into Subaru territory your gonna have to wait until your atleast 23.............unless youve got a huge bank balance to pay stupid insurance premiums.

There are loads of cars out there to be had that you can have fun in, mod them and increase power etc etc.
Renault 5 GT Turbos are ok, but insurance is still going to be high. Also make sure you dont buy someone elses problems.

Just a few small cars, but insurance will be pretty reasonable i would think, well it will be comparted to that quote youve had.

Confused.com is pretty good - I've been using it to get quotes on old bangers. Just don't bother if you've got any sort of performance or modified car, though - the firms it uses don't really want to know.

Sorry to say that at 18 I was driving a Fiat Panda, 900cc, 45bhp and ins. grp 1 - and still paying hundreds for the privilege. An Impreza GL still has a 2 litre engine, which means insurance companies view it as a powerful car and charge accordingly. You might have more luck with an old 1.6GL, but realistically I think you need to lower your expectations considerably

Back in january i got quoted a grand by TESCO to insure my 97 uk turbo. I was only 22 and had 3 points. Try Tesco.

Privelege are pretty good at the mo. not sure about 18 year olds though, its your own bloody fault for so young, sorry only jealous . Good luck hope you find a reasonable quote

S3BARU what size engine was the car you're trying to get insured on? Im 21 and bought a 1.6 lx saloon as my first car a few months ago...no real mods yet just got rid of the slightly ugly non-turbo front bumper and grille, completely stupid quotes off 9/10 insurers that I tried.... I ended up going with tesco in the end. still quite high though I'm paying just over £700 TPFT but it'll do until I get enough no claims to get a turbo sorted! The price we pay for driving the cars we love isnt it!!

The best advice I have is to phone as many insurance companies as you can. Then, just when you think you have the lowest quote, phone a few more. I would suggest a minimum of 10 companies, and you should have something more acceptable by the time you've gone through 20.

Echo the Privilege recommendations. They were over 30% cheaper than my renewal with L&V this year. Would have been half the price but the PPP and NCD protection bumped it up

Hi ya S3BARU, when i was looking for a car for whne i passed my test, i wanted to get a subaru Impreza and my parents new that no insurance company would insure me, so they told me not to bother phoning any insuranhce company as i would get a uber high insurance quote, or say we can't innsure me etc...

But i did get a subaru...Justy 1.2 GLII (mk2) and got insured through the CSMA and L&V and got a insurance quote of £930 fully comp! its still a subaru

The car cost me (parents ) only £600 and had done 100K miles and was in fairly good nick for what i wanted it for...learn to drive and pass my test...and it did just that. Then in the jan 04 in the heavy snow i wrote it off and was not worth clainming on the insurance.

So i got a new car a 1.6 8v Vauxhall Astra 5 door and it is great. and hopefully in about 2 years time i can get a scooby turbo .

oh yea im 20 as of 13/10.

My advice is to start off with a small car, small engine and work up to bigger car with biggers engine i.e. 1-1.3l to 1.5-1.6l to 2.0l and beyond

There's nothing wrong in waiting for the car of your dreams, so get a banger and build up your NCB.

I first saw an Impreza in rally form way back in 1993 (23 at the time) and was hooked. I then waited until I was 31 (September 2001) to buy a 2nd hand MY99 Turbo Wagon and pay a sensible insurance quote of £500 Fully Comp.

I've now finally got to where I always dream of. MY04 WRX Wagon that was brand new in April this year. 34 years of age and only £560 Fully Comp too

Insurance for young lads is stupid at the moment. There's no wonder so many just go without, when premiums are so high, and the fines are so low, comparatively speaking

We're just looking for insurance for my 18 year old on a 1.4 Ibiza, and a 1.6 307, both bog standard cars.

The quotes were £2300, and £2600 respectively, so more per month than he'd be paying on the car

If you're talking 307, that's nearly new and hence high value, which will put the insurance up a lot.

To be honest, I'd seriously consider something around the group 1-2 level to insure at age 18. I started with a Pug 205 1.1 (B reg). With 49bhp, no fireball, but nice chassis and pretty unburstable engine, hence fun to thrash around. More importantly, I had it for 3 1/2 years, it did 50mpg and I only spent money on oil, a new battery and a new heater fan (at £80 the biggest bill I had!).

If you can afford a bit more, the old Pug 306's were very good for insurance - IIRC, the original 1.8 was only group 5, which gave you >100bhp and again, a decent French chassis. Just a thought.

Bide your time, my first car was a 1.0 yaris. Now at the age of 23 i have 2.0 impreza sport.

try a 1.4 CLio, same group as the 1.2 but better. Also get the Youth to do Pass Plus. It was worth the equivalent of a year's NCB for j.r-xrs.

That was pretty much the result I got - somehow a car which is in group 20, imported (Japanese spec) and modified seemed a bit too much for them. On the other hand, I did get a reasonable quote for my 15 year old bog standard 1.4 van

I found tesco good i've got a impreza sport i'm 18 been driving for 1 and 1yr NC's, for £1800 had to try nearly every insurance company to find the best quote. although i called tesco in the morning and it was £2300 then in the afternoon it was £1800 which was weird but they did it for £1800
