The trade calls some jobs 'poor moral hazard'...

- motor trader
- amusement arcades
- scrap metal dealers
- circus or fairground
- betting shops
- professionals sports
- entertainers, tv, celebs etc
- snooker halls
- debt recovery agencies
- nightclubs

Put anything like that down and kiss goodbye to your chances of a quote from 99.9% of the mainstream insurance market.

I'd heard that traditional professional things like bank staff etc were good.

I'm in the Ambulance service and because I've done the equivalent of the Police Roadcraft course (driving on blue lights, driving to a system etc) you would of thought that would be an asset...My insurance co. said that because I am an advanced driver then I'm more likely to speed - and put my quote up

I thought that being a company director would of been good for insurance, as me & the wife have a small company. Bad idea with some insurers, they look at it as a downside. Now I put it down as clerical or accounts. They don't have a classification for general dogs body.

One way to find out would be to use an online insurance service like Direct Line or AA (Hint - when you are aked for the details of the car, don't use your own car details. You should be able to find lots of car registrations/make/model just by looking along your own street You could even experiment with different owner names - just keep the postcode the same each time). Try different occupations with the same car and see what difference it makes.

Some insurance websites list everything from Abbatoir Cleaner through to Zebra ******. Others stick to broad classifications (eg. Scientific and Technical covers about 270 of the specific occupations listed in the more **** websites).

Experiment

PS - remember to include part-time jobs in the quotations. You could be Mr Norman Normal, Civil Servant, and probably in the lowest risk job, but if you also play drums several evenings per week in a thrash metal band that will change things a bit . At the very least, it will mean that the insurer reckons that you are more likely to be on the road in the small hours of the morning when there could be a chance of other road users having had a drink. It could also be thought that you could be tired after working all day and then driving to and from a gig with a performance in-between.
