Default Insurance Questions

My renewal is coming up - Thinking of adding my partner to my poilicy as it reduces the premium by £50.

Few problems though.

1) She had an SP30 years ago - The Insurance company want you to declare everything less than 5 years old - The points have been removed, but we can't remember if it was more than 5 years or not...

Is there a way we can find out???

2) She hasn't updated her license to a photo license or changed the address

The SP30 thing will definitely be an issue but what about the address - Would that give the insurance company a get out clause??

Beginning to think it's not worth the hassle for £50....

Hi michaelro,

With regard to the address on the license, this needs to be changed to the correct address or she could face a £1000 fine from the Government.

Insurance is always based upon the principal driver (ie. yourself in this case) and an Insurer may not pick up on the difference in address on a named drivers license, this being due to the named driver may not necessarily reside with you.

If however you're claiming a "common-law" spouse discount it's likely that they will need the license to be switched to the correct address. If not, the worst that would probably happen would be 'discount revolked'.

The points situation is slightly different, as all Insurers will be interested in when these were.

With our Insurers an isolated speeding offence will not effect product rating and with most mainstream Insurers they will only rate upon the conviction if it's within the last 3 years.

When providing details of the speeding offence try and be as accurate as you can, but if you are unsure air on the side of caution and bring the estimated date nearer rather than farther away.

To be certain, you could call the DVLA as they will have details of your full record.

From memory, I think this may fall in to the realms of the 'Rehabilitation of offenders Act' and as such you may not have to disclose after 4 years old - may be worth checking out, but if underwriter asks for 5 years they will probably rate upon this.

Hope this helps..

Kind regards

Tony
