Default Can you claim for a nackered engine?

Just had a phone call off a friend with an Audi A6, 2.5 diesel turbo saying that his engine has let go, he took it to a garage and the mechanic told him that it sounded like the big ends had gone due to lack of oil. The mechanic then hit him with the news that the easy fix would be a new engine
Anyway, here's the question, is there anyone who has made a claim off the insurance for something like engine failure and been succesfull?

No chance unless you've hit debris on the road and that's totalled the engine

water intake to the engine from running through deep standing water? It's been torential rain these parts all day, he said the mechanic only listened to the engine running, and not investigated the cause properly, could be this and not the lack of oil that finished it.

Engines that take in water normally hydraulic, therefore the either stop dead bending something, or just literally bow up, with a rod through the block or similar, not the big ends going!!!

Thanks for the information, the car went to a local Audi dealer yesterday and they confirmed that the bottom end had gone due to the turbo sucking all the oil out of the engine! The owner is now looking not so foreward to a hefty bill for the rebuild.
