When do cars show up as stolen recovered?

When do cars show up as stolen recovered?

Is it only if they are subject to a total loss claim?? What if it was stolen and recovered with no damage, but the insurance only paid out for a hire car whilst the police were doing forensics?

normally only when there has been a total loss claim on the car does it show up
