I'm just weighing up a few options for this summer, gettin a bike is one.. or was!!

I have no liscense yet so I'm just considering the costs, I thought I'd best check insurance! I got a quote on an R6 for £4000

OK so I don't get an R6 but, realistically, presuming I pass my test etc, could I get a decent size bike insured for under a grand? If not I'm gonna go back to plan A and get a scoob!!

Oh yeah, I'm 24, clean liscense ( hell it wants to be, I haven't even got it yet!)... clean car liscense, 5 years car NCB no disabilities... yada yada

Cheers, Bob

U could have ahard time with this one unfortunately!
Im 23 with a full bike licence for 6 years and 7 years NCB, and the best quote i could get for a cbr600sport was £860 fully comp!
If you havent got experience on a big bike they dont like you.
Try quotes for something like a cb600 hornet or an aprilia rs250- small bike, big fun!!!! Dont be put off though, theres nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of opening the throtle on a bike and dissapearing on the back wheel!

Cheers matey.

It's looking much the same as car insurance then, guilty till proven inocent

I have a mini moto, in fact I've just been out on it for the first time in 3 months! Needless to say I fell off, maybe a big bike isn't such a good idea afterall!!

Bob,

Try getting a quote for third party fire and theft on something like a Fazer 600 / Honda Hornet / Suzuki Bandit or SV650. I'd have thought you'd get a quote for around £500 - £600.

Check the back of MCN Bike Mart for Insurance companies. There are a number of on-line companies (e.g. Bennets)

Cheers,

Ian.

P.S. Yamaha are doing heavily subsidised insurance on 2001 R1s - further details on www.yamaha.co.uk

Hi Bob,

Had my bike license for 18 months now and have a modded R6...full race system, Dynojet etc....

Spent a lot of time ringing round to get no quotes or £2K+, but eventually Bennetts came up with £950 full comp on the above. I'm 31 with 1 years no claims, bike ungaraged but with full alarm (plus some other devious devices).

Keep trying .

J

hmm, bennets .com is for sale

I'll get an MCN 2moro then!

If I were to get a bike it would be on finance so I'd really rather have it fully comp. R1 you say, my mate is picking his up in two weeks, would look good, two together, I wonder........

Cheers chaps

http://www.bennetts.co.uk/ I got a half decent quote from them - £600 3rd Party Fire & Theft on an R1. Fully comp insurance on bikes seems to be going through the roof - I've been quoted £1500 ish Fully Comp for an SP1 or Blade with 8 years no claims - twice what I pay for the Scoob insurance - don't think I'll bother.

The Yamaha offer takes some beating - George Whites were selling UK 2001 R1's for £5995. If you go to www.yamaha.co.uk there is a insurance matrix that tells you how much the subsidised insurance will cost.

Cheers,

Ian.

P.S. I can bring this weeks MCN along tomorrow if you're on the Dales run?

in 1999 i got my R1 insured with Yamaha link- i had no no claims and was 25ish- still only £500ish.

BUT... after 1 year they refused to insure me as i had to have 2 years NCB to get their cover unless i was buying a new bike (hence they covered me the previuos year)

so watch that in case they still do it....

worked out good for me as i never insured it at all and went trackdaying non stop

Tiggs

ps- when you can get an R1 why are ppl looking at blades and SP1's for more money?????

R1's are ssssssooooooo fast and loads of simple mods for them and 2nd hand parts etc

Yamaha web site is:-

http://www.yamaha-motor.co.uk/

Good luck with your insurance.... being an old ******* it doesnt affect my R1 too much - £440 fully comp unlimited mileage through Motor Cycle Direct. MCN is definitely a good place to start looking.

Dave

PS Best track day ever on a bike is Yamaha ARC at Nurburgring for R1 & R6 riders, but be very careful who you ride with. VOE??? OK....

an R1 as a first bike is fine- i got mine after a long lay off so it was the first thing i'd ridden since a zzr600 at age 18 5years earlier- no probs at all, i just went slow for a while!

it will only go as fast as you ride it- unless your mad it will be cool-its an R1!!!!!!!! just get it!
