Default Insurance Companies

Guys,

Simple question.

Why is it that insurance companies are so fearful of providing cover in Northern Ireland.

Is it because of our dodgy legal system in that there are not fixed sums etc for injury claims (which I believe you have on the UK Mainland)

Is it because they still think that most of the cars will be blown up in terrorist incidents

Shaun, I have often wondered myelf, I have family in Northern Ireland (Portrush, Bangor) and I am a frequent visitor, I see a lot of modified/imported car, exactly the sort of customers my company like.

From what I understand the reason a lot of UK insurers will only insure on the mainland is fear of the unknown. They historically have not insured in Northern Ireland so they do not have any stats/claims history for the area with specific postcodes etc.. Insurane is all about stats and if the stats are not there then insurers have nothing to base their rates on.. therefore they could be going in completely blind and could give our very cheap rates for very high risk areas or vica versa.

I hope that helps

To be honest we get told different things from different companies.

Some won't quote as they have experienced PI issues.

Others will happily quote, but will only do it though brokers based in NI, to take advantage of their local knowledge.

Others have refused to cover NI due to 'historical' issues, and therefore the companies who have covered there in the past seen to have the monopoly there already.

(would have typed a longer post originally, but my chicken salad sandwich was looking pretty good)

As I understand things - under the laws of England when someone claims its a fixed amount per injury.
Wiplash or whatever gets you a fixed amount of money

Over here under Northern Ireland laws it gets you as much as your solicitor can!

Should the law be changed - yes it should, but it won't because as far as I'm aware all changes much be passed by the Law Society of Northern Ireland.

And you guessed it - thats the bloody solicitors themselves who won't change the law as they're earning decent money out of it.
