Angry Sky Insurance, Please Beware

I have just hung up the phone from Sky insurance where I was attempting to resolve an issue over policy cancellation.

After accepting an offer of insurance over the phone, I decided to stay with my existing provider. I had not received or signed an policy documents at this time. When I phoned Sky to tell them I would not be taking out the policy I was not advised of any charges or deductions as the policy had not started.

I received a letter today advising that £130 was being deducted from my refund for charges and commissions, and that it would take 4 - 6 weeks for the refund to be processed.

Now common sense dictates that if I had been advised that the cost of cancellation would be £130, unless I was saving at least that much with another provider I would have stayed with them.

While I am sure that when tapes are examined ti will prove that I was advised that there would be commissions and fees, I know I was not advised that they would represent 20% of the total price.

So please beware. They seem like nice enough people, but listen carefully to what they say just before the take your money, you might not get it back.

Just to add our response to this which has also been communicated in a private message to the customer.

This customer (as are all of our new business customers) was made full aware of cancellation procedures verbally and in writing. We are one of the only insurance companies I know of who verbally go through typical cancellation rates before we take any payment for a policy.

The customer has received a service from us, we are obviously going to charge for this (as would any other insurer), we are a business after all. Also, to point out that our cancellation procedure would differ every little from other UK insurance brokers.

I had the same thing happened to me a few years ago with Adrian Flux. I had been deperately trying to sell the car before having to pay out for another years insurance on it, and you can guess what happened. The day after I gave my money to them someone phoned and said they would buy the car.

I had not used the car since the previous day and called them straight away but got charged over £100 for one days cover. Then I didn't get the balance of over £200 for well over a year!

They all record the phonecalls so there is a verbal agreement, and as you paid you have agreed a contract for them to cover you, even direct to an insurance company the same would apply. Hang on to your dosh until you are dead sure.

I just got a quote with Sky and it's the cheapest and lowest excess but not handed over any money yet as I have been trying all the other specialists. Must do it tomorrow as using the car the weekend and the insurance has expired.

My "current" insurers are Performance direct and they gave me a lower quote but I noticed an error on the renewal they had put 1994 GT not 1996 GTB. The price shot up a bit when they changed the details. So technically I would not be insured

Just something to watch for.
On some comparason websites my numberplate came up with a 1994 GT not 1996 GTB. This is probably why my renewal was wrong. I was suprised it had gone down £5 this year after all the accidents the snow caused.

The V5 just says Subaru Legacy no variant or version, but I don't think pleading ignorance and insuring it as a standard one would work if I had to claim though .

My only suggestion in this instance would be for people to "vote" with their feet, and don't use companies that impose such charges.

My insurance is up for both cars next week, and I know who I won't be phoning!

All companies will make a charge. Check your old policy it may have it in the small print under cancelations.

Just grin and bare it. All insurance companies are robbing basta**s. They provide a service that we need, or we cannot drive our pride and joys! I have had one accident (last year) in 20 years of driving, and my insurance has gone up 500 quid!!!
I hate them, they are as bad as terrorists, and should be hung, drawn and quartered as far as I am concerned! ( Rant over!)

What a fantastically grown up way of looking at things.

Of course some might say that if it wasn't for people like you having accidents we'd all be paying less
