Default Renewals - Why do they bother?

Ok so, because the scoob committed suicide and I needed a car, I bought an old w202 series C-Class Merc.

Now, she's done a grand job 10,000 miles so far and just walked the MOT, no advisories, so not bad for 17 years old.

HOWEVER! The insurance is up. Currently with A-Plan and this isn't a dig at them per say but insurance in general. They have quoted me £650+ for a policy with Aviva. Now, I have searched myself and Aviva will cover the car for £450 so £200 quid less than the quote.

Visiting the meerkat (well moneysupermarket actually) got it to £320. Aviva called to see if i wanted to take out their policy and i told them i'd had a much better quote. They insisted they could 'have a look at the figures' and bring it down.

15 minutes later, same price (£450) but now with added no claims protection which they'd left out originally. What a waste of time.

Likewise, I've missed the two calls from A-Plan but lets be honest I'm not going to take out a policy for more than double what I can get elsewhere and is approximately two thirds of the value of the car. Why waste everyone's time when they know it just isn't going to happen. I'd much prefer a bit of honesty theat says "look, this ain't our specialism so we won't be competitive. Sorry and call back next year we'd like to try again"

Apologies for rantyness

Hi,

Sorry to hear the price has gone up. It may just be because we are still rating everything on last years information. May be worth a quick call to see if we can squeeze the price down. We can only invite renewal on the information we have from the year before.

Feel free to speak to Nathan or Luke, they are our renewals specialists here.

Regards

Chris

The price going up I can understand. I have you guys down as a sport specialist (£550 for the Scooby last year 300bhp, mods declared etc) and not a luxo barge one.

Luke is the chap that has called but a quick check would see that £650 with Aviva isn't going to do it, I'm sure you guys would know they'd do it for a lot less than that.

As I said, no issue with yourselves, I was miffed with Aviva for trying to say they'd be able to come down by 100 quid and then clearly not managing it at all. Waste of everyone's time.

Sure that chap could have been better off speaking to someone they had quoted competively (especially as the website asks you for your best quote so far). Probably cost them enough just to spend 20 mins on the phone for no reason.

By the same token, i doubt that Luke is going to be able to come down £330 quid so is it even worth the call? Presumably if he could do it for less he'd have quoted me for less in the first place? Quote is for the right car etc.

You may also find that the chaps online are hiding a £1000 excess.

I'd hazard a guess that if we are £330 out, either you've changed something in the year, or something isn't right. We aren't just performance specialists we have over 40 insurers to choose from.

Definitely worth a call, we don't want to lose you.

Regards

Chris
