Default Replacing gear gaiter - removing metal washers

I'm replacing the gear gaiter on my MY99 which is attached to the gear surround trim by way of several metal washers which clip into brittle plastic tabs on the trim.

Any tips on how to remove the washers without breaking off the tabs?

I would get a small screwdriver in and fold back the metal spikes from the plastic peg, the washer should just slide off.

Unfortunately even with the smallest screwdriver available there isn't enough space to do that. I've tried a scalpel as well but no luck. It was not designed to be disassembled.

What about cutting the tabs off or cutting the clip body with some wire cutters?

Managed to get them all off fairly easily in the end - small tin snips did the trick. £0.99 set of replacement lock washers from eBay and job's jobbed.
