I'm intending to buy the parts to convert the UK spec single-DIN dash to double-DIN.

If anyone else is interested have a look here as I intend to buy the parts as a kind of group-buy for several scoobynetters to save shipping cost (shipping is more than double the cost of parts if only buying one set of parts).

Useful if you want to add a SECS or similar above the radio.

nope, just relocate it

there are two spare switch holes by the handbrake, and two spare by the fog switches

 

Well I only have one spare switch socket (IC waterspray and Clifford valet switch next to fogs, plus trafficmaster next to handbrake) so that's reserved for the headlight leveller switch.

The rest I'm glad to get rid of they're never used anyway

I'll give it a few more days then send out some e-mails to confirm the definites and get the order in. Looks like there will only be 3 of us so far but that still saves a significant chunk on shipping.

Here is the pic of Alberick's converted dash with a double-DIN head unit:



Here's a pic of johnfelstad's SECS unit installed in the standard double-DIN hole fitted to imports:



Note that if you want to install a double-DIN radio or the SECS unit at the bottom beneath the radio you'll need to get the extra brackets which go on either side of the radio to hold it at the top. I'm going to be putting my head unit at the bottom supported by the bit sticking out the back same as the single-DIN so won't bother with the extra brackets - let me know whether you want them.

 

Here's another pic of JF's install, showing the bracket I'm talking about which holds the head unit in place in the top slot. They come as a pair - one for either side of course!

Sorry for the delay again, turned out to be a busy few days for me. I've been intending clearing my Visa card before starting because I don't know how much is on it and it's probably close to the limit since I had to pay the insurance this month, but the bill seems to be taking forever to arrive (the only time a bill's ever late is when you want it to be early ).

Regarding MY97<, sorry I don't intend doing these in the group buy mainly because I don't have a clue what bits would be needed. Only reason I know what to get for the MY98-00 is because Alberick has already done it and posted the details in a previous thread.

I'm going to re-check the prices and will then drop those on this thread a mail with a guide price - this will assume that everyone in the group buy goes through and that we don't get charged extra for shipping due to ordering 5 lots, or get stung by customs.

All Impreza models in Japan (not sure about the US) had a double DIN slot (from 92 upto now), so it should be possible for you to just swap your dash against a jap or US one (same as I did for my MY99).
If you cannot be included in this group buy you can still order them yourself on 1stsubaru.com. Another thing comes to my mind, I'm not even sure that pre 99 models were sold in he US....? A lot of people seem to break their early cars recently, any luck there?

This Panasonic is a CQ-VX7700, only sold in Japan. Also available at some import shops like meltingpot but you almost pay the double price. It plays CD, MD and has a nice flashy display which you can change, black screen, a calendar with a mange type girl being dressed differently depending on the season, or the Tokyo bay bridge etc etc and it can control almost everyhting you can think about MD,cd changer, twin changer control TV control Navigation control etc etc.
