Default Changed to Sti steering wheel, now airbag light is on??

I have just put a blobeye Sti steering wheel on my bugeye but the airbag light now stays on.

I have used the blob clock spring and the only thing I can see that is different is the green wire going into the large black connector has been cut then reconnected using a butt connector.

Could this cause the light to come on? If not any other ideas?

broken the ribbon cable perhaps? did you keep it taped in a central position while fitting?

Right, after a bit of testing I now know that the black connector is for the horn so have ruled that out.

I am now waiting for 30mins after dis-connecting the battery to check the airbag connections. Will update once I've done this. Fingers crossed.

If I can't sort it I will have to put the original back on as have my MOT in a couple of weeks and doubt it will get through with the airbag light on.

Ok, have stripped it all apart again and check all the connections and I can't see anything wrong but the light is still in.

Can I keep the wheel but leave the airbag dis-connected as I have heard there is a way of using a resistor to keep the light off but I don't know how

I think you may find that even if you change back to the original wheel the light will be on as its holding the same fault and will need to be reset.

I could be wrong though and for your sake I hope I am.

That doesn't sound good, how can I cancel the fault off? Is it a stealer job?

It may well be.

I'm sure someone will be along to advise you better.

If you know of a decent friendly main dealer they can advise you better.

I wouldn't have thought it would cost more than about £50 to reset it as long as there isn't a fault showing.

Ok mate thanks for that. Will give my MOT place a shout and see if it's a failure first.

It will be.

Double check though.

Just double checked and SRS air bags are NOT part of the MoT. Yet.

so I think you're ok

Do the bugeyes have the OBD II port if so you could reset it yourself with the laptop and a lead from eBay

Yes they do mate.

I just spoke to a dealer and they said the airbag may not be compatible with the airbag module in the car.

I know alot of bugeyes have got this wheel in so don't think they are right.

Am tempted just to sell the wheel now and stick with the original.

Have you tried the old wheel back on?

I did this swap and it was fine, you STI wheel you bought has actually got a bag in it right? I know it sounds daft.

There is a resistor mod you can do to stop the light comming on, if you fit a non factory wheel this has to be done.

It fells heavy enough to have to have an airbag in.

After some searching on here I have found a few people who have done the same swap and had the same problem including Frayz.

I think I have to either swap the clock spring wires around or put the WRX airbag connector onto the blob clock spring.

Will update when I have tried them.

Have you tried swapping the airbag charge from your old wheel to the new one, that's what I did when I put a my05 sti wheel on my my03 wrx as I noticed part numbers were different so I just swapped them just in case anything wasn't compatible, easy to do,

any luck? FYI its not an MOT fail for airbag light, and the light shouldnt need to be reset - should go out automatically once the fault is rectified. double check all your connectors under your seats? Theyre always dodgy on imprezas, give em a wiggle...the light could be coincidental.
As for the ribbon cable...they need to be in the centre position when installed, so that you dont break the cable on full lock. They normally say how many turns they are lock to lock. I.e if it was 5 turns....you would very gently turn the ribbon cable one way until you feel it stop....then wind it back 2.5 turns so you now its bang on halfway. tape it in position until you fit the wheel. Then you now its halfway round when the wheels are pointing forward, and wont turn too far once on full lock. If you havent done this and have turned the wheel then the chances are you have broken the cable.

I have had my MOT and as you say it flew through not even an advisory on the airbag light though next year might be different.

I made sure I centred the clock spring before fitting so I don't think the ribbon is damaged (well not by me anyway)

I have also tried cutting and swapping the wires over on the clockspring airbag connector but that hasn't done anything so am going to try the bugeye connector on the blobeye clockspring next. Will post up how I get on, failing that I may just sell the wheel and get an OMP deep dish wheel an do the resistor mod.

Ive not known anyone have so much trouble, as mentioned it does make you wonder if the Squib is faulty in some way really.
