The fuses are in the drivers side footwell, and they all appeare to be fine.

So I assume it is the actual dimmer-pack.
It isn't a switch...it's part of the indicator assembly.

The dimmer controller is behind the glovebox by the stereo. You will see three (or was it two??) relay-like things. One is for the blinkers, the other for the dimmer.

Except that none of these appear to be the dash dimmer

Headlight dimmer (for main beam etc) yes, but can't find which one of these is linked to the little **** that makes the dash get brighter / dimmer.

This is annnoying, as I still have no idea what speed I am doing at night

Hmmm..... been a while since I last did this now so I can't honestly say I remember. I'm pretty sure that one them does the dash dimming control. If I recall correctly it's the one which looks like a cube (no rounded corners) that has a connector which looks like a chimney. I had a problem with no dash lights as well and I initially thought this was the problem but it turned out to be a sheared wire under the driver's dash. Again, if memory serves I think it was a yellow wire.... hope this is of some use Steve.

Cool

Well, yellow is definitely the dash illumination wire colour, so at least that's a start. The thing you described...is it a little blue thingy? Cos I found one of these and it turns out it's a relay?
Or do I just need to take the globox out completely instead of groping around behind it?

You definitely need to remove the glovebox completely. The thingy is black. It sits with, I think, two or three other similarly sized thingies on a bracket. The glovebox is easy to remove and it should all become clear once you can see what you're doing.
