Default Air con problem?

I've fitted full air con system including dash switch and relays to MY00. There is no refridgerant gas in at the moment, but when I press the dash switch it doesn't light up. Is this because there is a safety mechanism in the compressor that prevents it from working when there is no refridgerant in the system? Have checked all fuses and wiring harness connections.

Cheers

Don't know about the scooby inparticular but it is common for alot of vehicles to be fitted with a low pressure switch.
If you car has no refrigerant in it then it will have no pressure I guess and therefore the system will not operate.
I sell cars for a living and have had 'no light' syndrome a few times... Gas him up and I bet he'll be fine.
Hope this helps.

I did exactly the same when I fitted mine ! Got it gassed & it was fine, it won't engage until it's been gassed.

Have now got gas in air con system, works a treat. Brrrrrrrr...... However I'm absolutely gutted that the button still isn't glowing an ethereal sparkly greenyness. Don't even know how its meant to light up, is it a tiny LED? After 6 hours fitting the air con and several areas of skin missing from my hands, for the switch not to light up when its on is demoralising. Might have to sell the car if I can't get it to work.

Can anyone help me? Or am I beyond help

Flat Faw, have you noticed any noise coming from the additional belt installed. Since mine has been installed, i get this buzzing/humming sound coming from the engine bay.

i've had a look at my 'parts' Cd. The switch is made up of 3 parts: the button; a switch - which contains something i cant make out from the diagram, probably an led, but it isnt available as a seperate bit

Bit late i know but the air-con will not work without gas in the system...yes it does have a lower pressure switch (and a high pressure switch). This is to protect the compresser from running 'dry' when there is no refrigerant and compressor oil in the system.

Charlie Boy,

Only additional noise is a fairly quiet whoosh/hiss sort of sound from the heater matrix under glove box. Presume its just the refridgerant being forced through the evaporator when the thermostat activates. Wouldn't have thought you should be getting any noises from the belts if they are aligned and tensioned properly. I'd give all the (many) nuts and bolts you removed/replaced another tweak.

Cheers Albob

At £35 + vat from main dealer just for the switch without the button, and for a laugh I asked what just the button would be : £9.50 + vat !!!! They really do take the pi$$ sometimes. I think I'll just pretend it glows green to save my wallet and my sanity

Martin,
if it is the led/switch faulty - there are various switches for sale on Ebay.
do a search on 'subaru switch'.

As my wife will confirm, I've spent the last 2 months on ebay looking for all bits Impreza. Managed to get most of the air con off there, but the hard to find bits like main condenser and that dash switch had to be bought from breakers.

I've now aquired a wiring diagram and it appears the loom/harness is either switch illuminate or non illuminate. Wonder if mine (MY00) was never meant to light up anyway?

Hi Flat Faw, it's interesting, the noise appears without actually switching the A/C on, and it's a bit more than a fairly quiet sound, the work was done at the dealership. I'm getting them to look at it again next week, they fobbed me off last time as a feature.

Charlie Boy

The only thing that does anything when the air con is not on that is part of the air con system is the compressor, so could be a faulty one. Or like I said, its probably something that hasn't been tightened properly.

I would be interested to know how much your dealer charged you for the full installation and also where the noise was coming from when they finally locate it.

The cost was just over £1000, and the noise is def coming from the additional belt installed, or even the compressor. I'll let you know how i get on.
