Got home today after two weeks away and the battery in MY99 car was flat, I think it's the original that came with this import.
Went to Halfords to get a new battery and the model they sold me was too big to fit in the battery tray, any ideas which is the correct battery for a 99 import.

Original battery is a Panasonic 55023L-MP.
If your new battery fits without the tray just leave it. Just make sure it securely held done with the metal bracket.

The battery that is ftted mesures 5" (130mm) in width x 8" x 8", if I use the original holding down clamp the new battery must be the same width or the clamp wont fit, can anybody tell me what they have done to fit a battery bought in a local motorfactors. new clamp?

The halfords battery in mine fits the standard tray and clamp with no problems. Don't remember model number of the top of my head.

Same here, I have a MY93 WRX import and the Halfords one went straight in, worth double checking they've given you the right battery
