car overheated and burst a pipe and dumped all the water out
fans not kicked in to cool it
cant seem to find a thermo switch on the rad ( had one on me last fiesta)
so where does the signal come from to switch the fans on
temp gauge works ok

If it's anything like the problem I experienced, then try the following:
1. Start the engine
2. Switch on the air conditioning
3. The fan should automatically come on
If it doesn't...
Lift the bonnet (obviously turn everything off) and look down towards the bottom of the radiator on the right hand side - as you face the car. There is an electrical lead that plugs in at the base of the radiator which had come undone on my car and once reconnected, everything was fine. How the hell it came off is anyone's guess as it clips on and shouldn't disconnect.
Try that. If that doesn't solve the problem then I'm out of ideas.

Hi,
It's a bit of mutt really. I have a US '00 RS with a '95 JDM sedan motor. I wired the swap myself and I agree the fans are ECU controlled (and can run low or hi speed depending on coolant temp, vehicle speed and AC switch).
Right now my fans don't turn on. When I hook up the green check connectors, the main fan goes on/off, so I know at least that one is wired correctly to the ECU. I replaced the coolant temp sensor, but the behavior is the same. I am going to build an OBD1 interface to monitor exactly what the ECU thinks the temperature is. I might have a bad wire or floating ground that is causing false readings (I also have cold starting issues as well, pointing me in the same direction).
I was doing some research and found this thread. Just curious if the original problem was ever sorted.
