Does sound like a US switch. I'd be inclined to give a few breakers a rring, Grade A at Hayfield in the High Peak are my faves.

IIRC, they are an arm and a leg to buy new

Yes, you can do that. Saves wasting money. Not likely to be the screen itself, though, not all at once, and wiring? Doesn't appeal to me as a problem, especially as you've described switch probs.

Which model of car? The newer ones have a timer relay, you hit the switch, it doesn't stay down, pops straight back out, and the timer holds the relay on for say 10 mins.

Yet another unnecesary, nanny state, "labour saving" device that's OK while it works but causes endless headaches when it's 10 years old. Designed for the idiots who turn it on one January morning and then still have it on in July because they don't pay attention to anything when they're driving. I'd stop them driving rather than try and make the car idiot proof but that's just me a I guess.

Think I've been cruelly slandered there, don't recall writing women (might have thought it though....)

Matt - the point about which model year wasn't aimed at your swap with your mates. Rather it was aimed at your comment that the button doesn't stay in, I was just pointing out that later buttons, on cars with timer relays, aren't meant to stay in. If it's one of the later types then my first suspect would be the timer relay rather than the switch.
