Radio interference

If the noise only happens when the wipers are running it sounds like you need a supressor fitting to the wiper motor, This 'absorbs' electrical interference and used to be a very common requirement in the goos old days. The Coil pack is to do with your ignition/ HT system .... but if there's no interference when the engine is running and the wipers are off I would say the they are not the problem.

I'm now wondering whether its the reception!
Seems that the st(ereo) indictaor flutters when it happens. I have one of the pillar aerials. Can these be upgraded at all?

Not sure about replacement aerials but ..... Its possible that the aerial coax cable might have been routed very close to the wiper motor ..... worth a look and if so try and move it further away.
