I had LEd ones in mine, they were bright, and also throw up the dash light to say a bulb has gone because of the low voltage they use, although that is fixable. You might have to cut slighly round the edge of the where the bulbs go now: 2 X RED 24 LED CAR TAIL STOP BRAKE REAR LIGHT BULB 12V on eBay, also Bulbs Lenses, Lights Lighting Accessories, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 22-Jul-08 22:24:46 BST)

TBH, you'll struggle to get any higher wattage bulbs in the right fitting, and they may even be illegal.

LED would be the way to go.
