Default better bulbs for late model classic?

Hi has anyone fitted any bulbs to the late model classic that nice and bright? The ones I've got at the moment aren't very bright.

I don't want to resort to a HID kit yet as they're too expensive for me and I wouldn't be able to fit em

Waste of time uprating classic headlights as the lights themselves are rubbish.

They are he problem not the bulbs

Or so a few searches on here seem to say.

T1000, I wish alcazar was still around, but hay. I have in my classic crystal headlight units a pair of H4 GE 50% brighter Super Brilliance brought from Halfords - gold box at BOGOF. These are really good bulbs and won the best H4 bulb in Auto Express. Quite a few members on her recommend Osram NightBreakers 80% brighter and the Philips visionplus bulbs.

Uprated wattage bulbs are OK, but CAN be dear to buy, and CAN last only a fraction of the time of ordinary ones, increasing the cost yet again. I'd had probs with 100W bulbs on another car, so didn't go this way.
Uprated wattage bulbs can cause melting of wiring, burning of the contacts/reflector, and arcing leading to premature bulb failure. Note that I say "can", not all do, on not all cars! They do really need uprated wiring with a relay, seperate fuse etc. And they are not "E" marked, so strictly illegal:
But as the previous poster says, its the reflector is the poor part, not the bulb itself. It does not focus the light correctly, but scatter it everywhere bar the road. So to get better night time driving experience is to fit a set of morettes, which I was close to buying, but decided that i preferred the look of the OE units. Morettes use H4 bulb in the outer light and H2 in the inners.

Thanks for the info! Even a small difference will be welcome so I might get some of the above mentioned bulbs! I couldn't see GE ones in Halfords just Halfords own brand or phillips? Any idea what wattage they need to be, as I want to stick to standard wattage

Thanks

Halfords now do a 80% brighter lamp that is road legal.

I tried them and was pleasantly surprised, it is a much whiter light and definitely brighter than the standard lamps.

A worthwhile upgrade IMO

Who makes them? What is stamped on the bulb itself?

Without taking them out, I dont know. It might be GE or Osram but I am not sure

I am nipping up to Halfords a bit later so I will have a look and let you know

Ive used these in ALL my cars since about 2000, give off a really bright blueish light. In all the sets i've ever had only one has ever failed!! Wouldn't have anything else! They're also dirt cheap!!

As said befoire the main problem is poor reflector design, but fitting upgraded bulbs does improve things. Don't be tempted by the higher power bulbs, ie 90w/110w, these can melt the standard wiring as happend on wifes Scoob.

Tried the Halfords and the Nightbreakers which claim increased light output from the standard 55w/60w. Both good on normal unlit dry roads but have settled on the Philips X-treme for our motors as they give similar results in the dry, but are visibly better in the wet.

Blu-scoob, perhaps you may want to give these a go as they were only released last year, and much has changed since the year 2000.

I've read some reviews and I think I'll give the Philips X-Treme a go as they're a bit cheaper than the Halfords ones and came out on top in the Auto Express reviews.
I'll take a photo of the before and after beam image and will update this thread when fitted

Thanks. Would be nice to see these photos.
Perhaps we all should do a before/after picture thread for other members to see?

Quite hard to get before and after shots, unless you can fix the camera's aperture/shutter speed and take both on the same

No mate, please don't say things like that. Its not the camera that gets good pictures, its the person taking them
