Question Wiring problem

Need help on this one, totally stumped

This is long thread so please bare with me.

The wiring on my headlights and foglights are weird. With the key in the on position and with lights off on the stalk. I can press my front fog switch on and my sidelights come on and also the foglights. With the headlights on full beam, the foglights stay on.

Ive now replaced the front fogs with cibie spotlights. Thats wired through a relay and only come on with full beam. Now with the key in on position and the lights off on the stalk, when I press the front fog switch on only the sidelights come on.

Now today I fitted a HID Direct H4 hi/lo headlight kit, this has brought another problem to the table as to speak. The HID kit works perfect, dip and full beam but now the spotlights will not work.

The HID kit harness plugs into one of the original headlight plugs and the other just hangs loose with nothing attached. Again with the key in the on position and the lights off on the stalk, still when I press the front fog switch on the sidelights come on.

Now if I plug a headlight bulb into the loose headlight plug, the spotlights work on fullbeam and if the bulb is removed the spotlights go out.

By the looks of it, Ive got a broken circuit somewhere when the bulb is removed from the loose hanging plug and its only complete with the bulb in.

So my question, how do I fix this or get around this ?
Can I bridge the loose headlight plug with a bit of wire across the terminals ?

[ the spotlights are tapped into the high beam feed, that the HID's are connected to]

Go out and buy yourself a circuit tester. The type you want has a brass body with a festoon, (double ended) bulb in it, a point on one end, and a metre or so of wire on the other end, terminating in a crocodile clip. Cost a couple of quid from carshops.

Now, with the croc clip connected to battery -ve, probe the wires behind the headlight connector, (use the one feeding the HID's) to find which wire is live ONLY when main beam is selected. A partner selecting/deselecting main beam helps here.

Scotchlok a wire to the one you find, and lead it to your relay, terminal 85.
Just to be sure, other relay terminals:
Terminal 86 to earth, 30 FROM battery, and 87 to spotlights.

Absolutely NOT, you'll generate a short circuit and if it doesn't blow your lighting fuses, it will almost certainly lead to a fire.

The relay was wired like this:

85 to to full beam live feed
86 earth
30 positive on battery
87 positive spotlights

That worked perfect with the standard headlight, but not on the HID's. Then I found a diagram on the the net, were 85 and 86 are swapped and still doesnt work either

Why bump it? You have to find the correct wire, end of.

Circuit tester. End of.

you need to make sure that the wires to the spotlight are as follows:
according to the wiring diagram Ive got, the fog lights are switched live, not earth

one wire comes from the new relay (number 87)
and the other wire goes to EARTH

exactly as per the diagram above

easy enough! ...if yer confused, just remove wires from lights and start again

Right I have not tested this yet, but I got a sparky mate to check it for me. This is what he says, the H4 plug that is left unplugged needs a load on it for the spotlights to work.

He thinks if you remove the relay and wiring for the spotlights. Now re-wire it this way, the positive of the spotlights to top pin of the H4 unplugged plug and the negative of the spotlights to right side of the H4 unplugged plug. His theory is the that the spotlights are now running off the original cars headlight relay and there is now a load.

Remember this has not been tested, so does this sound right.
