SPOT LIGHTS OR DRIVING LIGHTS?
#1
Yoza,
I'm an exowner but new car has fogs
Its the pattern of the beam that dictates if the lights are driving lights or fogs. Fogs will have a spread out beam just in front of the car, driving lights and spots will assist high beam with a long narrow beam of light.
It is also illegal to wire driving lights to dipped beam, they should be wired into high beam only and must automatically go off when dipped beam is selected.

Of course I break speed limits (rural GLF's, not 30/40/50 or urban limits) - but I thought we were talking about fog lights - or has this thread done the famous "turn left and go off topic after 20 posts"

One slight problem with wiring fogs up to main beam.
When it is foggy & you really, really need them on.
Switch to main beam to get your fogs on & you wont see bu$$er all 'cos you will get so much light reflected back at you, you will go blind.
Although if you are the tosser everyone else says you are(I am undecided) it's probably too late.

If they don't do much as stated earlier why turn them on anyway???
They light up the area directly infornt of your wheels and no more.
Do what I did and get some driving lamps. Much better. You run the risk of adding yourself to the max brigade (oops i'm stereotyping again)
Edited as I neglected to read the earlier posts cos I'm tired and it's my birthday and i didn't see the flamethrower driving lamps bit

This has probably bin done to death but here goes,
On me my01 I have driving lights in the bumper, same as every sub, when they are on they do not blind you in fact they are less bright than the head lights (morrettes),I know they dont blind coz Ive been followed by my own car(on the very rare occasion I let her drive it!)Now then, why have I been pulled over twice in three weeks by the local(cheshire)police for avin them on?
Is it coz they are bored and have nothin better to do or is it a major crime? On the first occasion I simply said sorry OK didnt realise they were on ETC ETC.On the second occasion I questioned as to wot was the problem in having my driving lamps on,they dont blind so wot the big deal.I was told they were not driving lamps but fog laps, the reason for this statement woz that they were below the bumper level so they are fogs. When I asked him wheather they were blinding he replied,no but thats not the point, just turn them off untill its foggey,if we pull you again your up for three points,or words to that effect.Does anyone else get this attention and has anyone actually recieved three points for it?
disillusioned Yoza.

Yoza,
Agree with Tim, you have fog lights as driving lights only come on when you use Full beam.
As for points, im not sure but i dont think you can get points for having your fogs on when its not foggy but you can be fined around 30 quid thou.

They're well within rights to pull you for driving with fogs on, they do dazzle other drivers and they're only to be used when it's foggy, hence the name "fog lights". When I see people with them on when it's not foggy I just think "tosser", sorry mate but that's the impression it gives

DRIVING LIGHTS ONLY COME ON WITH MAIN BEAM!!!!
Fogs can come on with dip or Hi beam/Main

I dont think Steve has a problem as such, he just thinks anybody who drives with their fog lamps on when it is not foggy is a tosser. Personally, I think Steve's attitude is absolutely................ spot on I could not agree with him more.
Anyone who uses fog lights when it is not foggy, you evidently have no idea about the lights on your car, tell me, do you drive with no lights on when it is dark? Just wondering.
Preparing to be grilled......

You said they didn't dazzle, but your 'evidence' is that of being followed with them on. Ever tried having one coming at you when you are in a low or small car. they do dazzle, believe me! Especially when it's wet as they reflect off wet surfaces big time. Just because it didn't dazzle you, doesn't mean that they don't dazzle others. Show some consideration for other road users.
Either way though:
If they're fog lights then only use them when it's foggy etc (the definition in the highway code is less than 100yds visibility) unless you want to be one of these to**ers that other posters have correctly pointed out.
If they are driving lamps, then they should ONLY be on when the main beam is on.

LOL!
Some fogs do actually dazzle thou, ive seen the kids round here with just side lights on and fogs, and the fogs dazzle me when im crossing the road etc so being in the driving seat would be more so.
The worst times though are when your on country lanes, having someone come over a brow of a hill or round a corner when your going slightly up hill can actually cause you to crash as you cant see the road etc properly. Peoples eyes react differently to light, and this is a major factor in why some people say they dazzle and some dont.

OK, Im about to wire them up to my main beam, and turn them into DRIVING LIGHTS.Didnt get much sympathy here, yet every scoob I ever come across has them on,begining to wonder how many people on SCOOBYnet actually drive scoobies?

Yeah - I find this annoying too.
It seems to be quite common (especially with Beemers, Peugeots and Renaults) for people to drive around with their fogs on.
I regularly get dazzled by these cars.
Why the hell should you enjoy better light on the road at my expense?
I decided to go on an anti-fog light crusade over the winter, flashing every car I saw with fogs illuminated on a clear night.
Did me no good whatsoever - I reckon most people thought I was saying 'hello'.
Given up now...

I replied before seeing your last post.
I DO drive an Impreza and I DO NOT use my fog lamps unless it's foggy.
On a more positive note - let us know how you get on wiring up your fogs to the main beam.
Will you adjust the beam angle of the fog lamps? Any hints and tips?
Might try this myself.

Hey no offence mate!
You've asked a question and got some replys.
Didn't mean to have a go.
You've also stated that you'll take some positive action (ie wiring up your fog to the main beam).
So fair do's to ya..

Just bought two world war two search lights...just wiring them up now.
Burn holes in the garage wall, can't wait to get out.
P.S. says on the back Subaru Impreza WRX and that is the bit you are likely to see!

Dip beam reflectors are designed with a beam cutoff to the right so it doesn't shine in the eyes of drivers coming the other way.
Fog lamps are designed to illuminate both kerbs, side to side, and have no beam cutoff to the right - THAT'S why they dazzle.
People that drive with front (or rear, for that matter) fog lights on when it isn't foggy are brainless morons who show no consideration for other road users and deserve to be given three points and a fine......

Although it seems most agree driving with fogs on all the time is not good. Surely all would agree, stopping cars with fogs on should be lower down the police to do list.
Rather they stop my car cause its been nicked than because i've got my fogs on.

Yozza, I like your humour! I've been laughing loud at your replies!
Now, you bloody maverick, toe the line! You're not meant to have 'em on unless there is fog - that's why they dont have a long beam, and are no real effective use to you, other than for lighting up your front bumper plus a few feet! And yes they can dazzle, tall blue eyed drivers ocassionally, which is why they should mostly be OFF!
It looks visually quite nice IMHO (clearly, you should switch them on for photocalls...). Swop 'em for 2 x 130 w driving lamp Cibies from Scoobysport - now THAT is effective.
If you are insistent, do the decent thing and buy a 3 series BM' instead, and form a pressure group!

Yozza,
While your wiring your fogs to your main beam any chance of looking for my wheels ????????? "Calm down Calm Down"
The point about MOST scoobs that speed is that generally the only people they are putting in danger are themselves, though there are obviously exceptions.
In your case incorrect use of fogs and dazzling someone travelling in the opposite direction could cause a serious accident to somebody else. That's where the 3 points + fine comes into play - it is classed as automatic careless driving.
When you are cruising the prom at Southport at 20mph, fogs on windows down (perm flapping in the wind), stereo up (listening to Showaddywaddy) it's np. When you out on the open road it's BIG problem.
