If the relay is clicking then the power is fine. Hate to point out the obvious, but have you checked the bulb. Failing that it could be a wiring fault as they are not the most weather proof circuits I have seen. Also, you'll have the fuse for the switching which will be the standard one in the car, but if it has a relay there'll also be a separate fuse for the live feed from the battery. That could be anywhere as it will be fitted by the light installer and will not be part of the car's wiring loom.

the power feed from the battery is a 30 amp, thats fine. is there a main beam fuse in the car ? im thinking the relay on the lamps may be at fault. or the cars main beam fuse? bulbs i cant see both blowing at once or maybe im wrong

if u can hear the relay can you get to easy?
If so id get a 12v tester and just see if you have 12v coming out on pin 87(to ground) when you put your main beam on,
The if you do have 12v you need to do the same test at the bulb holder,
If you have nothing its a wiring /poor earth issue,
If you have 12v at the bulb holder then its the bulbs,

Pin 86 is from the switch so is 12v when they are on
Pin 85 is ground pins 85 and 86 can be either way round
Pin 30 is the live from the battery
Pin 87 is the 12v out to the bulbs

If you can hear the relay clicking, it's unlikely to be that at fault.

There should be a fuse in the wire from battery +ve to relay terminal 30, have you found, and checked that?

Also, don't be so quick to dismiss bulbs. It's defo NOT unknown for BOTH bulbs to go at once.

Do you have a circuit checker? If so, carry out the checks detailed above, but I'd be having a bulb out first and checking it across the battery with the aid of a short length of wire. Don't let it light for too long, (if it does light), it will get VERY hot VERY quickly

we are under the bonnet, found head light relays and fuses all fine, have one main beam lighting up but dipped beams going out, one off the relays was whining and another was badly corroded. sorry for such a late answer but we have just returned from holidays

so if im right in thinking, i will need two normally open relays for each lamp and a 5 pin switching for the main feed?

That seems a lot.

The 5-pin switching is probably the OE relay, but my classic morrettes, which work the same as bugeye ones, only needs ONE relay to switch the main beam.

I suppose for the cost of one extra relay, you could TRY replacing all three.........
