Classic Morettes and MOT?
I have Morette headlamps on my MY00 Classic and MOT is due in a few days time.
I have just discovered that the two inner lamps (which are main beam only) are not working. The outer two lamps are working fine on both dipped and main beam.
Would this fail the MOT?
I have been told that whilst these "additional" lamps are not necessarily part of the test (the outer two lamps provide dipped and main beam), then because they are fitted then they MUST work. Is this true? So if I can't get them working before the MOT then I would be better off just removing the 2 inner lamps?
Steve

If it's not fitted it can't be tested, but just because it is doesn't mean it should - front fogs are never tested on an MOT but most cars have them fitted. If you have main and dipped beam working just tell the tester they're going to be wired up as spot-lights which are not tested

Do they presently come on, even though rusted?
If it bothers you, remove the earth wire off their relay, to be found close to the n/s light unit.
And driving lights MUST be wired to EXTINGUISH when dips are selected, that is the law. They can come on hwever you like....

Fuse is OK, pretty sure bulbs are OK but will check (it's a pain getting the bulbs out of the driving lamps without taking the whole unit out of the car).
Pretty sure the fault is either with the relay or the wiring (most likely those crappy scotchlok-type connectors!)

There should only BE one Scotchlok, and it's from the headlight m/b feed to relay terminal 85. If the relay is clicking, both that and the erath to terminal 86 are OK
That leaves the fuse, connection to battery, connection of that wire to terminal 30 and feeds to each light from terminal 87, returns via suitable earths.

There are definitely 2 Scotchloks, one to either side of the 3-pin headlight connector on the nearside
There's a fused wire from the battery +ve to the relay and a brown earth wire that's connected to the chassis earth above the nearside headlight.
Then 2 wires from the relay that pass across the front of the car and connect to the inner lamp on the offside.
This is from memory, too dark and cold to go outside and have a look

TWO Scotchloks? Strange.
The wiring for Morettes is:
Relay terminal 85: FROM headlight main beam, so-called "trigger wire". (so where does YOUR other one go?)
Relay terminal 86: earth.
Relay terminal 30: FROM battery +ve, via fuse, or fused relay.
Relay terminal 87: to lights.
Both lights then need suitable returns to earth.
Testing:
1. Does the relay click whn main beam is selected/de-selected? If yes go to 2, if not, check that the trigger wire has current when main beam is selected, and that there is continuity between terminal 86 and earth, a DECENT earth.
2. Is there current in the FEED from the battery? If yes, go to 3. If not check the fuse, and connections.
3. Is there current in the feed wires to the lamps? If yes, go to 4. If not, suspect the relay.
4. Are both bulbs/holders ok? If yes, go to 5. If not, replace as needed, check out the bulb-holders too, they can fail, and are also the CONNECTORS.
5. Are there decent earths from bulbs to battery/suitable earthing point? If yes, start again at 1. If not, make good.

Alcazar,
Thank you very much for this info I will do some testing tomorrow to see if I can find the fault.
I can't really comment on the quality of the electrical installation, it was done by Steven Darley, and we all know what amateurish work he performs Seriously though it must have been right 'cos they were working previously and he fitted them exactly the same as they were fitted in his wagon.
Thanks again for the help I'll let you know how I get on

Haven't had chance to check out the wiring but the good news is that they passed the MOT!! The tester did query why they didn't come on with the main beam but I used the "spotlights" line as suggested above which worked!
Thanks for all the help

OK - i'm bitten - no photo of wiring connections (apart from a poor/useless one of relay wiring) - but it does show 2 scothlock connectors (above crap photo of relay....)
He needed to include a wiring diagram some where on the page

Wow, Ravensblade Impreza, I'd completely forgotten about that site - it used to be a mine of information 9 years ago when I first got my Scooby
Thanks for the reminder

As another solution to the original problem - I had a rusted reflector on one of my high beam morettes - I cut 2 cardboard disks to cover the inner high beam lights - disconnected the bulb wiring and hey presto - PASS MoT Gave me time to get a replacement lamp unit ordered...
