In the last month or so, when starting the engine in the morning the alarm chirps or sometimes goes of for 3-4 seconds.

Am suspecting the battery may be on its last legs - anyone else experienced this?

Its an 05 STI with the original battery.

Battery would be favourite (tho' my car ; year 2000 ; is still on its original battery), or the battery in the fob....?

Trickle charge your battery that should solve it
Get a spare battery for your key fob and put it in the glove box

It is the battery, it's on it's way out. Mine did it over the course of two winters then died on Boxing Day.
